I could do without Respect on the list (I like Otis Redding's version better) and Smells Like Teen Spirit, I've never been a huge Nirvana fan. And IMO that's not even Marvin's best song on the What's Going On album.

Also, I probably would have picked a different Beatles song, like Happiness Is A Warm Gun or Eleanor Rigby.

Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone" is probably the best song you can pick for number 1. It was fresh, artitistic, lyrical, musical, and probably the most influential song of the Rock n Roll era. It's like the whole scene changed after that song was released. The rest of the 100 can probably be picked out of a hat.

I can't belive Teen Spirit beat Stairway,

The legally-embattled Michael Jackson came in at No.58 for 1983's Billie Jean and in No.337 for Beat It.

Such a stupid list.  Maybelline in the top 20.  Yeah, right.  Anybody else think it's fishy that the top 2 songs revolve around the name of the magazine?

1. Here There & Everywhere - The Beatles
2. God Only Knows - The Beach Boys
3. In My Life - The Beatles

I'd do it something more like that.

you beat me to it. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was amazing, but i doubt it deserves 9th best song ever. "Stairway To Heaven" ain't even in the top 20...i mean, you can't make such a list "accurate", but I agree with little as for this one

This is the biggest piece of bullshit ever made. You cannot have a top 10 list (for the sake of the argument), and not have stairway to heaven on the list.  That is one of  THE most popular songs from that era, and even around today. Led Zeppelin IV has sold past 20,000,000 albums (dont know the exact number). You cannot deny their spot of being one of the most popular bands of all time.

I think this list proves we need to do a list on here, like we are doing with the non west hiphop songs at the moment. As I totally agree with Lincoln that songs like Mercy, Mercy Me, and Whats Happening Brother are better than Whats Goin On.

hmm, i might do a list like this when i'm done with the hiphop one, but it does take some work...but yeah, should be cool and like i already said, Stairway cannot not be in the top 20...i think on my personal list it would actually be no. 1...it's like the definition of a perfect song

I don't know, I think Stairway is a great song and all but there's so many great songs out there. That's not even my favorite Zeppelin song to be honest.

That's ANOTHER Bullshit list.  Lemme tell you how to SPOT a bullshit list.  Any list that has the Rolling Stones ANYWHERE near the top of it, is Bullshit.  The Rolling Stones are a great band, with great music.  There are HUNDREDS of songs better than the greatest rolling stone song, though.

Any list that has Derek and the Dominos near the top is also a fanboy list.  Derek & the Dominos were a great band (lol, here we go again) but COME ON, MAN.  The best ever? THEY'RE NOT EVEN CLOSE!  Such a stupid list.  I could name 50 songs from Motown alone that are better than any Derek & The Dominos song.  Layla is great.  Is it better than Just My Imagination? My Girl?  Ain't No Mountain High Enough? You're All I Need To Getby?  Stop In The Name Of Love?  The Tracks of My Tears?  I'll Be There?   Motown alone shits on nearly their whole list.

Such a stupid list.  Maybelline in the top 20.  Yeah, right.  Anybody else think it's fishy that the top 2 songs revolve around the name of the magazine?

1. Here There & Everywhere - The Beatles
2. God Only Knows - The Beach Boys
3. In My Life - The Beatles

I'd do it something more like that.

"Like A Rolling Stone" was more groundbreaking, influential, and inovative than any of those three, AND, it was a hell of a great song. Don't believe me? Go read some John Lennon interviews regarding it.

Fuck that, it's not as good.  John Lennon was a drug addict who also thought Yoko Ono looked good, so I don't really trust John's opinion.

Good is relative. I won't even bother addressing the Lennon comment because you only say that when he disagrees with you. The bottom line is that there are millions out there that do think it was as good, and it was definately more influential, and creative than the three you mentioned. Combine all those and I have no problem with it being number 1. If it wasn't number one I wouldn't complain, but I have no problem with it being number one. There aren't any Springsteen songs near the top and you don't hear me whining. I could make an argument for Thunder Road or Born in The USA, but I wouldn't bother, because it's just a stupid list.

I don't know, I think Stairway is a great song and all but there's so many great songs out there. That's not even my favorite Zeppelin song to be honest.

point is, there are so many great songs, so many amazing songs that you can't compare like it's mathematics and put one above all others, another one above all except the first one and make a list like that. That's just impossible, especially when you have to trie to be as 'objective' as possible. To me, "Stairway To Heaven" are just eight of the greatest minutes in music history, but i wouldn't say "Stairway" >> any Marvin Gaye song for example, you just can't compare. But if I had to do a list I'd end up putting it as no. 1 i guess...there's just so much that is absolutely mind-blowing about this song, the guitar playing, the flute stuff and all its melodic aspects, the way the different parts of the songs are connected, the lyrics and how they mesh with the music at certain points of the song and finally what this overall is turned into...........but of course it's taste and there are other songs i could go on about like about this one, but overall i feel it's like the most.......complete and perfect piece of music there is

might be gettin slightly off topic, but which one(s) is/are better? I mean, "In Bloom", "Come As You Are", "Lithium" and others are all great songs, but them beating "Smells Like Teen Spirit", I can't see that. That's one of the greatest riffs (fuck whether its simple or not) I've heard, one of the greatest ways in which a song ever kicked in (those drums, goddamn, drum playing is dope overall), the way Kurt sounds on it...that's the definition of grunge rock for me and its best song...i don't disrespect your opinion, but i wonder what makes you like other songs on this (of course classic) album more or say they're better respectively

TRAUMA,
As much as you try to be this all-knowing, more mature than everyone in the world sort of guy, you actually come off as quite immature and stupid, and its quite obvious you are trying just a little too hard.  Give it up..........I am pretty sure most people on this board quit trusting your opinions when you were saying MJ's Invincible album was classic.

The list was not made up by the magazine. It was made up by a group of 172 voters, inluding producers, song writers, analysts, and was calculated with a points system.

They could've picked a better Bowie song I think. I mean Heroes is a great song, but he's got better ones. Ziggy Stardust should be way up there, in the top 25.

And where is Prince, Purple Rain? When Doves Cry?

Well Trauma, i guess if you dont know me i must be a nobody on this board, which really breaks my heart!  See, i dont post everyday so i dont have 10000 posts, but i have been around for quite awhile and most people on this board would probably say they respect my opinion.  I dont have a flashy sig or pics with my posts so yeah, i dont get noticed, but that is not my intent.  I'm entitled to my opinion though, and i think you are trying to hard to be some sort of god music critic, its amusing, i said it, no big deal  peace

Actually I think it's from when the rock n roll era began. I don't see any pre 50s songs. I could be wrong though.

Rolling Stones list of top 500 songs is an example of racial prejudice.  Notice there is no 2pac, Fugee's, Rakim, Dr. Dre, Snoop Doggy Dogg, or rap artist at the top of this list.  They threw in a few token R@B artists, but let's be real, everyone knows African American's make better music than white people, African's brought the music with them over from the slave ships.  There are very few select white artists that can compete at their level, Rolling Stone's list should reflect this fact.

Who taught Elvis how to play?  The black man.  It's the same story, played out over and over again, Elvis copied the style of African American rock artists, although he may have been sincere, and I believe he was, regardless, he became the superstar because he's white, and this white country is prejudice, and they want to listen to an average white artist before they'd listen to a great African American artist.  The same thing is true today.  Limp Bizkit is a perfect example of this.  They are average at best, but they became superstars off of a style that was a rip-off of authentic hip-hop.

Face it... If America hadn't of enslaved Africa, there would of been no Elvis Presley or Eminem.  They are products of African American culture.

You're an idiot. Even in the Rolling Stone Greatest artists, 6 of the top 10 are black. No one is taking away from black artists, but who was so great back then that you'd consider Elvis average. It's more than just being white, it's about being amazing. Yeah so blacks invented rock and with out it there would be Elvis, but a white guy invented Basketball, and white people made it an industry, and with out them there would be no Michael Jordan. It goes both ways.

I don't care what encyclopedia Britanicca says, I don't give white people credit for inventing basketball.  Around the time James Naismith was alive slavery was still in practice, so you really think that a country that accepts slavery and reduces blacks to 3/5's a human being is really going to give them credit for inventing anything?

Besides, basketball had always been around in some form or another, James Naismith and company just had the resources to put basketball into the national spotlight.  If a few slaves got together, or recently freed slaves got together and started throwing balls into a peach basket, you really think they would of had the resources and oppurtunity to develop that idea into a national pastime?

I could be wrong but I believed Basketball was invented in Canada not the US, and Canada didn't have slavery at that time.

if blacks brought music fro mafrica, i guess whites are responsible for the lyrics then, with songs from all the european cultures and poetry written by european writers. unless of course the africans had a way to write clicks down in some form or fashion.

Well.. if you look in an American Encyclopedia it will tell you that James Naismith, of the University of Kansas invented basketball.  And you still missed my point.  Sure, it could have been invented in Canada, or Estonia, I don't know where it was invented, but my point is, that had African American's invented it out on the cotton fields they still would have lacked the resources to put it into the national spotlight and recieve recognition.  So if an African American invented something like basketball before Naismith, who would have known?  How would they have gotten the recognition?

I'm so stupid, of course blacks invented basketball, and the whites stole it just like everything else. Blacks invented the phone too, then that pesky Alexander Graham Bell stole it. Don't forget about Calculus. Everyone knows Isaac Newton ain't got shit on Nas when it comes to dropping science. The one thing I don't get though is how did Naismith steal the game from the enslaved blacks when he was only 5 when slavery ended? Nevermind, he must've visted the US south as a toddler during the civil war and saw them playing basket ball in the cotton fields. The white slave masters would have no problem with their slaves playing ball when they're supposed to be working. Yup those blacks did everything. Fucking whites should have stayed in Europe. I guess it started when the Greeks came to Egypt and took everything from the blacks; math, astronomy, science, philosophy, democracy. All Egyptian Pharoahs were black, but wait......if Egyptian Pharoahs were black then they enslaved millions to build the pyramids. That can't be right. Black's aren't capable of such evil. Only white men can perform evil, after all the whites didn't invent anything except evil. Now I'm confused, could you please clarify this for me O' great wise one?

Like I said before, even if an African American did have the knowledge and creativity to invent the phone it would have been impossible to make that idea a reality when they were locked in chains and working from can't see in the morning to can't see at night.

As for your claim that the black Egyptian Pharoah enslaved their own people that is actually a misunderstanding.  Imagine you are a poor farmer or trader, living on far away on the outskirts of Giza in the time of the Pharoah.  When one day, the Pharoah summons you for official state duty.  Some government officials come and pick you up out of your own little world and take you to Giza for a few months to work on the pyramids.  You see people from all over Egypt coming together for a common goal, accomplishing feats as a collective group that could have never been accomplished individually, you feel yourself a part of something, a part of something greater, a part of something that may have little use in this life, but you are taught that in the next life it will be a stepping stone to heaven and eternal life.  You are eventually taken back to your farm, but what you saw and heard during that experience hieghtens your existence forever.

Oh, so the Jews help build the great pyramids because they wanted to? I guess that's why they complain about being enslaved by Egyptians. Also, the top Egyptians were most likely arab looking rather than black. If you look at the facial features of the pharoahs in statues you'll notice that the nose and lips don't look like that of black people. That idiot Nas said in "I Can" that the Sphinx had a black nose so they blew it off, but when you look at other statues of the same pharaoh, Chephren (who it was most likely modelled after), you'd notice a very non black nose.

Just when everything's all dried up, along comes ignorance like Mana from the sky!!!
Nas Is a fucking IDIOT, the nose getting shot off by Alexander the Great is a fucking myth, it never happened, the Nose was gone since nearly when the Sphinx was built by most accounts.  After these things were built, the next pharoah's had the statues defaced, and in some places even recarved, since the old pharoah was a god, the new pharoah felt that threatening, and destroyed the old statues.  So the nose likely either collapsed, or was disfigured by a later Pharoah.

It’s okay — Black Lives Matter has the solution to all the problems in the black community.  And with Biden as president and Governor Newsum locking down the State of California, all racism, injustice, sickness, and death will be completely eradicated from planet Earth in 2021 and unicorns and fairies will gallop and fly in a state of everlasting bliss and felicity.
