Title: just got me a 20GB Creative Zen Touch
Post by: Suffice on February 11, 2005, 07:07:26 PM
and i have to say i'm extremely satisfied thus far. EXCELLENT sound quality, easy to use (very similar to iPod), and another thing i like about it is that it's not an iPod. The battery life is twice of that of an iPod, and plus you can take mp3s in and out of the player, something you can't do with an iPod. It also comes with a carrying case and all that jazz. The only thing i didn't like was the headphones which it came with, which are pretty much crap. I paid 249.99 and there's an extra 20 dollars mail-in rebate, so it will end up costing about 250 tax included after i get my rebate, so it's a better deal overall than the 20gb iPod (299.99).

size... it's a little bigger than the iPod but it weighs about the same.. i think like .4 ounces more. visibly i can't tell the difference in size.. it's just a little fatter

i was thinkin about the micro one, but damn, it's the same price as the Zen Touch, but it has 1/4 of the disk space and 1/2 of the batterly life. The only thing it has goin for it is the size.. i guess it's more cool looking too

The removable battery is the big plus  ;) you'll never have to send it in and pay $100 for a replacement when your battery dies.

I went with the iRiver H340 (40GB)

It sounds very similar to yours with the good battery and how you can use it like a hard drive and store anything.
It has a nice colour screen, plays videos, views JPEG or BMP images,  FM radio & radio recorder, voice recorder, text reader, plays WinAmp playlists.

It's also very easy to use, if you can read you should have no problems.

I own an iPod and an iRiver and without a doubt, iRiver > iPod.

I used to be an iPod user, but the battery of my iPod died in a few months so I was like... FUCK these damn iPods, I'm never buying anything from apple again. Now I'm a user of the Creative Zen Xtra 30Gb which was actually kinda cheap ( € 200 / $ 250 ) and still a pretty good mp3 player. I love it. It's not the best looking mp3 player, but it's not like that's a reason for me to buy another. This one is about perfect.

US$384.99
About $15 cheaper than the iPod.

No offense taken.  Appearance was not something I really cared about when I was looking at which player to purchase.  But the (colour) screen on my player does look better than any of the other players IMO.

Imo, Creative Zen Touch looks better than the 1-dimensional Ipod, but it's not a big difference.

I just bought a Creative Zen Touch 40GB and a Monster CarPlay FM transmitter for playing in the car.

I'm pretty satisified with the Zen, except a few things:

* There's no option to browse music by folders, it's all based on ID3 tags. (Same as Ipod) Annoying when you have a folder with misc. tracks.
* A colour screen for viewing album covers would be dope, I guess Iriver got this.
* The touchpad is a little too sensitive.

As for the Monster CarPlay FM transmitter, it works good in certain areas, and not so good in others.
My city have 20+ radio stations on the FM band, so it's hard to find a frequency without noise, but it works cool for the most time.

Browsing by folders a good feature to have when you have a lot of music.  I use that instead of just searching by album or artist.

Word, I have 2 folders called "New Albums" and "Old albums", and additional "Misc. singles", "New Shit", etc..
I had to tag all the albums, and give the "New shit" and "Misc. singles" folders a album name so Zen Touch could sort it proper.
Thank god for MEXP (http://www.mexp.dk/index.php) for Winamp, you can change tags for whole albums or whole folders in one go, and give them "1-xxx" numbers by just highlighting them.

Does the Iriver handle folders like the computer.. ?
And does it show the album cover if there's a album cover in the folder.. ?
How good is the color quality on the screen, can it be compared to a good mobile.. ?

hell yeah, that takes forever.

I hook my ipod up to the stereo via RCA wires in my head unit's AUX.  FM transmitters dont have as good of quality as hard wiring it

Download a program called MediaTagger.... use the filename to tag songs, or vice versa.... it's really dope & easy to use...

It took me about a week to tag everything before i uploaded the songs to my ipod.

Yes, you have the option of searching your files that way or by artists, album or genre.
No, as of right now you can't view photos and listen to music at the same time but that might be possible in a future firmware upgrade.
It very good quality I'd say.  Better than my cell phone (Samsung SPH-n300 (http://product.samsung.com/cgi-bin/nabc/product/b2c_product_detail.jsp?eUser=&prod_id=SPH-N400&redirect=yes&prod_path=Phones+and+Fax+Machines%2fWireless+Phones)).

I search thru the file tree and once the song is selected it displays the tag (you have that option).  So I can have the Thug Life album under 2Pac and when I select a song it will read "Volume One" "Thug Life" "Pour Out A Litte Liquor".
I used Musicmatch Plus to tag the music I download and I use Audiograbber to rip CDs and you can set it up so it tags them the way you want.  So once I rip a CD it's ready to go.
