Title: Best Hip Hop Producer
Post by: Hittman on August 25, 2001, 08:27:36 AM
I dont want this to go off topic so please keep this post strictly about Hip Hop producers. Anyway the question is who is the best hip hop producer in the game, you can also add people who deserve a mention. I know most of you are just going to say Dr Dre, but man what do you guys see in his producing, back in the N.W.A days he was pretty good, I mean now hes just getting any sound, reducing its attack, play a couple of chords, release it, and even then its Mel Man who does the work and Dr Dre slaps his name on it. I dont think that makes him the best in the buisness just becuase he makes some okay tracks in larger number. But If you do want to say Dre that is fine but please give reasons why you think Dres the best Hip Hop producer dont just come and say "DRE RULEZ".

Anyway back to the point in the thread, Fave Hip Hop producer??I think some of the sounds being produced by people like DJ Premiere and Hi-Tek are just dope as fuck. NY State of Mind PTII by Nas or The Sixth Sense by Common, there both tight tracks. As for Hi Tek, his work with Mos Def is dope and that Sound Bombing CD was amazing. Also the tracks he has made with Talib Kweli like Good Mourning Vietnam are just classic. I think DJ Quik also deserves a mention for his solo work aswell as him featuring on other artists songs, for example, hs new work with Kurupt is just a dope beat to it.

Honourable mentions have been deserved by Dat Nigga Daz, who shined on Chronic (better then Dre easy. even if he wasnt on very much). DJ Premo, Eric Sermon, Soopafly, The Alchemist, RZA, FredWreck (I know he sounds like Dre alittle but still atleast its his own work) Jonny J, DJ Uneek & even some old schooll shit by Eric B.

Shit man, everybody know's...Dre Day!  Dre's a REAL producer unlike some peeps who make a billion beats and sell them without even meeting the artists they work with.

Dr. Dre

Because He Has Had Many Transformations. He Changed His Style 3 Times And I Have Felt Every Single One Of Them. From The N.W.A. To The Chronic To The 2001 Styles Have All Been DOPE! He's Always Original And Sets Trends In Music. His Style Is Distinct And Everything He Touches Is AMAZING! He Can Do HIP HOP Or R&B...Ain't No Stopping Him...

What?? You say that DJ Premier is washed up becuase he is using the same formula as he has been doing since the 80s, but then you say Dre is the best Hip Hop producer, I dont know if you didnt realise or not but Dr Dre has been using the same formula as the late 80's early 90's just like what you say about DJ Premier.
Title: Re: Best Hip Hop Producer
Post by: Don Jacob on August 26, 2001, 03:33:50 AM
maybe washed up was kinda harsh

BUT i stick to my word all of primos beats are the same as the one's on gangstarr's first album...he's shown no artisticle growth

and dre hasn't recycled "dopeman" for 20 years

81-85, dre was all about the party funkadelic stuff
86-88, dre was doing the street underground stuff
89-90, dre was expierementing with different genres like rock, jazz, blues, and symphony orchestra for d.o.c's michelle's and various different ruthless artists
91-95, dre started g-funk the sound that changed rap
95-96, dre did some mediocre expiremental stuff

97-01, dre has done many different styles of his furturistic funk....his sonic and agressive beats to his laid back stuff for snoop to his "colorful" beats for eminem

you obviously don't much about hip hop to say dre has stuck to the same formula
Title: Re: Best Hip Hop Producer
Post by: Hittman on August 26, 2001, 03:44:41 AM
Well maybe you are right but I still stick with my words and they are the Dre is not on top anymore. Its been 20 years, he needs to find something else to do (definetely not rapping, that was worse then the producing)
Title: Re: Best Hip Hop Producer

if dre's not on top then who is....seriously hi tek is hit or miss

jay dee is hit or miss
rza is hit or miss....mostly miss with that crappy ass digital bullet album

automator is good but hasn't done enough to be considered to be in the top 5

alchemist? naw

anything any of these artist have done in a 2 year span dre has done or done better

i'm sorry when you got industry greats like

quincy jones
mary j blige
the king of pop michael jackson
paul mc cartney

either saying you're the greatest or wanting you to collab with them you've acclomished more in music in general and have conquered the rap scene

Just becuase they havent accomplished<sp> alot of things in the rap gamn and they arent as well known (ei HI-Tek) or even that Mary J Blige and Micheal Jackson havent said they are great doesn't mean they arent good. Dre was on top at the G-Funk stage (in producers) but not now its just to me that he aint as good as he was back in the day of N.W.A. and G-Funk era.

yeah but to just barge into this message board acting like an ass and proclaiming dr. dre is sorry producer is a little immature on you're part and counting on how you have no proof of how dre is a whack producer....and maybe you thinking deathrow is still great is PROBABLY where all them outrage toward dre stems from....anyways stop trying to get the last word this is scencless ....let other people post on this topic i won't post on this topic no more if you don't

Dre is washed up... what the hell.. from a money perspective he's made more scrilla in the last 4 years than he ever made at Death Row.

SSLP + MMLP + 2001 + Up In Smoke

2001 sold over double what the original Chronic album sold.. the original Chronic album was actually pretty slow selling for the first few months until the Ruthless beef gave it a bit of a buzz - plus you gotta know he's making it from Eminem.

Oh and recently Grammy and Source award folks gave him Producer of the year...

Now sales, money and awards aside (thats the people who take things at face value instead of looking deeper taken care of...)

Dre has moved beyond layering samples for one reason... samples are a shortcut to getting the sound.. now he can afford to employ musicians to replay and add to/modify samples he can build things that sample users dream of.. he can isolate and either include or remove an element etc...

Lately people are knockin Dre for using musicians ermm.. you think Quincy Jones or David Axelrod play everything on their songs alone? they hire in session musicians.

Well money isnt everything you know, just becuase he sold alot on aftermath doesnt mean anything.

SlimShady Lp was good I suppose, I was dissapointed with Marshall Mathers LP, 2001 was a good album becuase of Hittman, Xzibit & Kurupt. The Up In Smoke Tour was only good when Ice Cube did his thing and some Eminem bits were good, only place dre ripped it was Nuthin But A G Thang.

Exactly Eminem is part of the reason Dre is doing so well, he woudnt be as big if it wasnt for Eminem. And Chronic was a hell of alot better album then 2001.

Well?? Does it matter one bit that he got best producer at source awards, didnt Nelly get best album of 2001 (i think anyway) and as for the grammys has anyone like DJ Quik ever won a grammy, someone who actually deserves it.

Automator is my favorite right now (handsome boy modeling school, dr. octagon, deltron 3030, and recently gorillaz.) I'm not saying he's the best, cuz dre has been around for a long time and has consistently dropped dope beats, and he changed hip hop with g-funk which puts him at the top. his production has been dried up as of late, but only detox will tell. and hit tek isn't fucking near being the best producer in the game.

yall is foolish.. hands down Dr Dre, there is no telling how he has changed the game with his unique ability to produce.. but Dre lately has been lacking, been hearing the same damn futuristic thing in his songs, im not hating, just that it gets annoying after awhile but big ups to dre though...
yall under rate Timbaland, big time!! have yall heard "Ugly" by Bubba Sparx, tell me that shit aint tite.. and he has been bangin ever since Aaliyah(RIP) "If Your Girl Only Knew", and "My Pony" by Ginuwine, i mean this guy has had like over 20 hits, recently its, "One Minute Man" and "We Need A Resolution"... now hes going to bring up sum unknown artist, tell me another producer that has the backround of him BESIDES DRE...

Kill that "DRE don't really produce" bullshit, dog... We don't just say DRE is the best coz of his popularity. He's a music connoisseur who always tries to bring creativity and originality in his music on top of the ability to transcend regional frontiers and appeal to fans in the West, the East, and the globe (I'm originally from France, I'm Black as fuck and I live in Brookyn so I know...) On top of that, DRE is by very far the most versatile producer in the game. Joints like "Xxplosive", "Real Slim Shady", "Fight Music" (off D12) and "Let Me Blow Your Mind" are a far cry from each other. Plus, despite what you may think, DRE actually plays some instruments (Mel Man himself said so) but even when he does not, he's able to make others such as Scott Scorch deliver sick ass keyboards notes and blend them within beats and chords to drop a classic beat like "Still DRE". U gotta be able to respect a guy who creates music that hits you within 10 seconds of first hearing. Something else: longevity. NWA, Snoop, Cube all the way to Hittman, Em, Xzibit etc... YOU gotta respect that. Plus some of YOUR favorite producers and beatmakers such as Rza, Primo, Pete Rock and the great Marley Marl give him official RESPECT so it speaks for itself. And one last thing: production is a very diverse artwork. DRE does not produce like DJ Premier or Timbaland. Those 3 have very different production methods. Primo takes an array of diverse sampled sounds that he blends together over drums he plays himself. Timbaland is a keyboard genius, who openly admits that he can't play any real instrument, but still comes out with banging tracks and sounds that only he knows how to find on a sampler or a board. DRE on the other hand, uses samples (sometimes), drums, live instrumentation (since 2001), keyboard and little tricks only he knows about to actually PRODUCE a record, not just the beat for whoever to rap over, but the whole SONG, including hook, chorus, whateva. Who do U think came up with the idea for Nate Dogg to say a catchy ass "Hold up, hey!!" at the end of "Next Episode"??? Mel Man?? Scott Storch??? No! A genius of a producer, not a beatmaker. I love Primo, Quik, Timbaland and others coz they got sick beats AND mastered their respective styles. Havoc, Hi Tek, Pete Rock, Erick Sermon, Rockwilder, Alchemist, Meech Wells, Rza are some of my other favorites but DRE CHANGED CONTEMPORARY MUSIC forever. Not coz VH1 said it, but coz the hardest muthafucka I know in Paris, London, Queens or where YOU are FEELS DRE's beats one way or another. U may not like Dre like most of us do, but RESPECT the MAN's talent and kill the bullshit. I love DAZ but he never proved after Death Row that he could drop a classic record (even though he drops DOPE beats) So?????? Is "What's The Difference" or even "Lay Low" a classic rap record? You tell me...

THANK YOU, dog... U know the real too... You could add Babyface and Teddy Riley to that list... And doubters could check the credits on Babyface solo releases for proof. Great producers HIRE instrumentists for specific sounds, keys and such coz some are just legendary within their craft (Johnnie Watson and Michael Thompson for lead guitar, Nathan East for bass etc...) But those instrumentists can't produce shit coz they don't know how to bring a song together and lay a chord over a drumbeat etc... Now props goes to Primo for his sick ass style but he doesn't play ALL the instruments either and he doesn't need to coz he based his style over samples. That's his CRAFT. So respect DRE's...

Man, that's what a producer is all about.  Guiding the artist to make a good song.  A producer ain't someone who makes a beat in 15 minutes & then just gives it to the artist to go rap on it themselves!  Dre's got real craft.

I (like many others) gotta say Dr.Dre as my number 1 favourite. I mean, c'mon, obviously. He's actually changed the game with his producing. The Chronic didn't sound like any other hip-hop record of that time. And comparing The Chronic to the next one, 2001, makes his position as the don even stronger. He totally re-invented himself between albums. Nowadays everybody want a Dre beat... Some Dre magic, cause that's what his beats are.

DRE RULEZ  ;)

I also dig Warren G a lot. He's got that same kinda magic in his beats as Dre's beats. However, they're a lot more melodic than any other producers work I've heard. I really dig the melodicity (is that a word?) of his beats, while they also make you nod your head. I think Warren don't get half of the respect & attention he deserves. (BTW, wasn't it weird that Warren didn't produce or appear on any of the tracks on Nate's Music & Me?)

My top 5 right now would be dr dre, alchemist, Primo, Nottz & madlib.
I don't need to say why dre is tight as its already been said here. However his major problem is he uses the same beat over & over (don't believe me peep fuck wit dre day, g-funk intro & who am i, they all have the same bassline, and more recently looking at you and put it on me, its just lazy). He's still the best though. The Al Chemist is tight as fuck when he uses samples, but not so good when he doesn't. Worst comes to worst, right & exact and home sweet home are all classic beats and always will be. primo may use the same formula all the time but he has come up with the two best beats ever (Above The Clouds & Boom) and consistantly produces dope beats. I have only recently heard Nottz but every beat i've heard by him has impressed me. Madlib is probably my favourite crate digger producer and Quasimoto is the maddest shit for when yo've been smoking some light green trees.  And personally i hate timbaland and don't understand why he is so big, his beats just sound like a big shitty mess to me but thats my opinon and i don't want to hear him work with dre, chairmen of the boards should be dre and erick sermon.

Immortal u's a hater

U see one of the important differences between Dre and other producers is that he does NOT make 'some okay tracks in larger number'.

The number ain't that large it's the quality.
Who could ever do what Dre did and make the whole hiphop industry be dominated by his own style which he created.

First u say...

Quote

money isnt everything you know, just becuase he sold alot on aftermath doesnt mean anything.

But then...

Quote

Eminem is part of the reason Dre is doing so well, he woudnt be as big if it wasnt for Eminem.

Eminem is for shure part of his commercial success but didn't u just say that doesn't mean anything?
Eminem didn't teach Dre his production skills so it doesn't matter if he gives Dre comercial success or not.
That shit ain't got shit to do with Dre's untouchable production skills.

Your argumentation consists of shit that ain't relevant like

Quote

Chronic was a hell of alot better album then 2001.

(So what, tell me which producer made betta albums than Dre's OG Chronic)

and fucked up shit like

Quote

Yeah he can employ Mel-Man and get him to do the work.

which is  = nothin

Then there's shit like

Quote
back in the N.W.A days he was pretty good

What the fuck?
Admit the fuckin fact that he wasn't 'pretty good' but D O P E and he still is.

and SAD shit like

Quote

2001 was a good album becuase of Hittman, Xzibit & Kurupt.

Kurupt had 3 appeariences on 2001 of which 1 was wack(Xxplosive)
Anyway 2001 is a beat album and it's Dre who makes those beats.
Sayin it's these rappers make the album good is defently hatin'.
Still D.R.E. is probably the best track of this album and Dre is the only rapper (Snoop's only on the hook)

U say we shouldn't just tell our opinion but give SERIOUS REASONS for our opinion...

Quote

Its been 20 years, he needs to find something else to do (definetely not rapping, that was worse then the producing[/u])

like u do ? ? ?

If the fact that a producer is in tha game for very long makes him not being good in your opinion, I feel for u...

and after I saw that shit 'WORSE than his production' I really wondered why I'm readin ya post.

Dre did not only change his style but made the whole industry change to his style and I don't know what more u can expect from a producer.
And  he's about to do it again with Detox so fuck all tha haters...
