Title: The Greatest 50 Hip-hop Albums Ever - #35...

Geto Boys - Grip It! On That Other Level (1989)

This isn't officially thier debut but it's the first time we were introduced to Scarface and Willie D who replaced Juke Box and Johnny C as members of the group.  Their DJ, Ready Red and dancer-turned-MC Bushwick Bill rounded out the group that made this memorable album.  This is very similar content-wise to Efil4zaggin where you get over the top violent and explict lyrics and hard bangin' beats.  Considering the controversial content and that Texas wasn't exactly the Mecca of hip-hop at the time this album sold very well.  Even legendary producer Rick Rubin (Run-D.M.C., LL Cool J, Beastie Boys, etc.) was very impressed by these boys remixing the album and re-releasing it the next year.  Geffen Records was supposed to release it (the re-release) but backed out of the deal due the lyrics and negative mainstream media coverage however it did get picked up by Giant Records.  An important album to say the least, Grip It! On That Other Level showed the hip-hop world that the south had something to offer to.

Sorry, I didn't have time to put together a review and get the hook-up.  I'll try to do it at a later date.
I just wanted to get this moving regardless.
