what album would you give them?
For me it would either be The Chronic or Midnight Marauders depending on what other music the person likes, if there into aggressive stuff then obviously the Chronic, if they're mostly coming from a jazz/r&b background then Midnight Marauders
I know a lot of people would say Illmatic, but honestly I would never use it to get someone into rap. Illmatic is an amazing album if your already a rap fan, but for someone who's never listened to rap before, it's not that appealing.
How about you guys?
-
iŽd give them Paid In Full or Death Certificate 8)
-
all depends on wat their background of music before, but probly some atcq or if they got a rock background, some early rick rubin produced shit.
-
you got a point with Illmatic, but I donŽt see The Chronic as incredibly aggressive...some of it is, but depends on the song. If someone wanted to listen to hiphop for really aggressive stuff IŽd give them "Warriorz" or "Bacdafucup"...however, in general:
The Marshall Mathers LP, All Eyez On Me, Reasonable Doubt, The Score, Doggystyle, Life After Death, Wu-Tang Forever and a whole buncha others, tight albums that are easy to get into, have good production and a certain pop appeal
Mecca & The Soul Brother, The Low End Theory, De La Soul Is Dead, The Listening, J5 LP and other stuff that is smooth, well-done and not too aggressive if the person wasnŽt into hearing about guns, whips n bitches
The Chronic, We Come Strapped, Safe & Sound, ATLiens, Aquemini, The Fix etc for somebody looking for the really melodic stuff
but it all depends on the person...maybe somebody tryina get into hiphop would immidiately fall in love with cLOUDDEAD or Urban Thermo Dynamics and not care about Dr. Dre for a second...

"Doggystyle" should do it for anyone
-
id go 4 rythm al ism, simply cause there is a song that will appeal to everyone on it. great all round masterpiece 8)
others blueprint, doggystyle, all eyes on me, black sunday

DJ Quik
I've gotten friends who don't even lock rap music but love DJ Quik's music. I'd recommend Rhythmalism. The musical feel of the album is easy on the ears for non hip hop heads.
-
I would introduce them to Run-DMC, The Beastie Boys, Eric B & Rakim, Public Enemy, Mos Def and DJ Quik. That's the only artists I listen to regularly anymore really.
-
I was a rap fan before '2001' ;D

a little bit off topic, but damn homie how the fuck did u get over 2000 negative karma... :o.

depends on the person and what type of hip hop your trying to get to them
if you want to introduce to just pure hip hop then something like illmatic
if you want to introduce them to some party stuff something like doggystyle or legal drug money
if you want to introduce them to a more mature sound something like midnight maurauders or common...
your best bet is to give them a little bit of everything
-
Depends on what they like. If they listen to laid back/stoner music then E. 1999 Eternal. If they're interested in the lyrics then Me Against the World. If they like great production then Safe+Sound, Rythm-al-ism, or The Chronic. If they aren't easily affended and just like great music then Death Certifacte.

LMAO

heres what i did for someone.
start em off with something not to lyrical, but lots of technique and good beats. eg. Bone Thugs.
Next, something with good beats and a little substance, but not necessarily the best technique. eg. DJ Quik. Then drop the classics on em, Illmatic, Reasonable Doubt, the ones that everybody wanna hear. After that, they'll probably be into hip hop enough that they can make their own decsions on what they wanna listen to.
-
black album, chronic 2001, and the documentary would be pretty good because they are pretty easy albums to understand.

yup same here, when i stood up and took notice of tha west 8)
-
some atmosphere, simply because thats almost the only hiphop i like.
-
also i think the blueprint or reasonable, ill add those, i think jay z is a really easy rapper to like.

I barely listened to rap until my uncle bought me this record when I was 13. After that i coundln't get enough rap. So definatly 2001.
I'd also go with doggystyle, some dj quik. Game's shit is easy to listen to. Same with Jay Z. After that id definatly turn them to illmatic like C-clamp said. And straight outta compton

anyways, what I wanted to add is, The Blueprint (the Jay-Z one) is definitely a great album to get somebody into hiphop...poppy, but not watered down, melodic, brillantly produced and lyrically characteristic for the genre, but on a pretty good level
-
cypress hill - black sunday
thats what got me into hip-hop...
-
If they are into death metal - Brotha Lynch Hung "Season Of Da Siccness"
-
Outkast would be the easiest to get somebody into rap. Nobody's going to NOT enjoy something like Aquemini.

That's fucked up, man. Lincoln would be one of the only people on the forum who actually DOESN'T deserve to get 'dissed'.

Is there such a thing as a rap album that's NOT easy to understand?

man i find myself listening to hip-hop with people, and i start laughin at a line or some shit (like a free record), and they dont even notice half the lyrics... dre's flow is real slow, and his voice is clear, i goto agree chronic 2001 is real easy to understand... plus you dont get distracted by the geniously simple beats, its easy listening..
-
a great DJ Quik album
-
i'd go with doggystyle or me against the world
-
It's hard to say because it depends on the person. If he already has a bad idea of rap like alot of people do who dont like the commercial stuff, then youll really have to pick a good album. I do know that i started listening to hip hop only 5 years ago (I was 14). On the way to washington DC for our 8th grade trip this kid, who became like a brother to me starting at this point, showed me doggystyle. I wasnt obsessed with hip hop from then on, but i was obsessed with that cd. I memorized the whole thing and as the years passed i realized how much i liked rap, and i havent bought an album that wasnt hip hop ever. I have burned a couple but they get almost no air time on my cd player.

if you are honest with yourself you would HAVE to start them off with pop stuff, something they can relate and graudally build from
so in that case, the main one that comes to mind is eminem or 50 cent ( unfortunately!!! )

50 - cent ? nah hell no... maybe slim shady, or marshal mathers... not so much eminem...
i think the best shit to start people on is pac, cube, dre, quik, warren, xzibit even jermaine dupri... not snoop doggy dogg coz that shit is real gangsta. i dont personally like over-board gangsta shit, although i like to hear sublte gangsta lines in the raps i listen to...

Eazy-Duz-It never failed me, but thats so oldschool now. hmm, i'd prolly say not chronic, but chronic 2001, thats got something everyone will like on it in my opinion.
