Title: What's Up With The Gas Prices?
Post by: Low Key on November 15, 2005, 12:21:31 PM
A month ago gas in Minneapolis was almost $3 a gallon, but I just went to the gas station by my house and it's down to $2.03 a gallon. It hasn't been that low in almost 2 years. Are gas prices dropping elsewhere?

In San Diego it's as low as $2.39.

It's 2.65 by house in South Gate,CA well L.A lol, , compared to 2.99 a while back.  Congress asked some Oil Company Execs about their sudden profits during one of the quarters for this year, that could be a reason.

It was like $0.88/L last time I saw, but I passed a gas station today on the bus and it was about 85 cents. Way down, in August and September it was like $1.30. I would imagine it's just supply and demand. When the prices were high people cut way back in their use so lower prices were actually making more money in the long run.

"The executives represented five major companies that, along with their global parent corporations, earned more than $32.8 billion during the July-September quarter. Consumers, meanwhile, saw gasoline prices soar beyond $3 a gallon in the aftermath of supply disruptions caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita."

Why, where do you live that it would be more than that? If you're in the US, this is litres not gallons. A gallon is around 4 litres, US has it so cheap.

Why do oil companies answer to congress?

A huge increase in prices is very likely to be a result of collusion on the part of the companies, which (correct me if I'm wrong) is illegal in most countries.

no its just supply and demand on the oil markets.... demand outweighed supply so the price rose to over $70/ barrel i believe its dropped below 60 now but this is still 2 - 3 times more expensive than what it was 5 years ago when prices tended to fluctuate between 15 and 30/ barrel. not all petrol stations are owned by the oil companies which is why they say it would be unfair if they used the extra profits they are earning to distaught the price at the pumps lower than the market value, plus they have no obligation to do so....

Everytime people bring that shit up about the prices from Europe to the price here in the U.S, we know already dammit.  The complaint is that sudden increase and the profits oil companies enjoyed, and not the actual price of the gas

You seriously thought YOU are the ones to make profits from the wars america leads? Hell nah. The business giants do, the people in power do.

I was just commenting on the gas prices being erratic for a period of 2 months.  Where did I say that I thought the people are the ones getting profit?

I agree with 7even in this case, but I do understand the Americans. If you always paid a certain amount of money for something and the prices increase dramatically all of a sudden... :-\ I buy gum every day. If the price of a pack of gum would increase from €0.85 to €1.50, I'd be pissed off too.

Seeing as us Americans are spoiled in terms of gas prices, I probably shouldn't tell you guys gas is now down to $1.97 a gallon here.  ;D

Hopefully it won't matter in 5-10 years as more and more consumers switch to electric or ultimately hydrogen.

WTF, lucky mofo. It's still about $2.50 around here.

7even shut up.  the reason US prices are cheaper is because the US has some of its own supplies.. plus they take less tax than european govt's do. in answer to this europe is talking to russia which is scaring the americans who have money invested in saudi oil, and saudi's themselves.

anyways.. back to the main point. i want to add that the prices over here have been rising and falling in exactly the same way they have in the states too in relation to the norm. (see what don rizzle said)

At the moment they've dropped about 12p (about 25 cents) from the panic situation a few months ago.

^^^ we actually pay pretty much the same for petrol here in the uk compared to america the only difference in price is caused by the hugely different levels of tax

It's those damn treehuggers.  >:(

I don't expect the prices to get any lower. It'll probably start to steadily increase from now on. If the government took away just 5% of a wildlife refuge in Alaska, we'd probably see gas prices go down another $0.20 for a few more years. It's not like the animals wouldn't still have another few hundred square miles left.
