It’s a case of being better safe than sorry. While Hurricane Isabel is expected to be a weak sister when she finally reaches Toronto, these kinds of storms can be unpredictable. So it pays to at least think about how to protect your life and your property before the winds of change blow through on Friday.

At the very least, experts are expecting high winds and driving rain - which could combine to cause some serious damage. Flooding is also a possibility. Which is why the city of Toronto emergency preparedness teams are dispending advice about what you can do today to be ready for the inevitable tomorrow.

By now you know about taking in everything that’s not nailed down, like lawn furniture and loose branches. But there are other hidden dangers you may not have considered. Among them:

Outside your home

Clear your eavestroughs, downspouts and catch basins of leaves and other debris that prevent proper drainage. It’s a summer chore you rarely get around to.
Be sure the water drains away – and not towards – your home. It’ll help keep your basement dry.
Make sure disconnected downspouts are draining properly, ideally 1.8 metres (or six feet) from basement walls.
Ensure storm sewer grates (catch basins) both on and near your property aren't blocked by garbage, leaves or other debris. What flows up must go down, and if the drains are obstructed, all that water could head your way.
To report downed trees call (416) 338-TREE (8733) .

Inside your home

Fix leaks in walls, floors, windows or foundations. It’s too late once the water falls.
Move items off the floor of your basement, if your lower level is prone to flooding.
If your basement floods, call Toronto Water and Wastewater immediately at (416) 338-8888. It’s open 24 hours a day.
Call your insurance company as soon as possible to report any flooding property damage.
Get a professional to help you clean up, depending on the extent of the damage. And hydro and water are a deadly mix, so remember to shut off the power before trying to fix anything yourself.
Open windows after the storm to let the drying power of fresh air in.
Throw out any food that may have been affected by flood waters (including food in cans or jars).

What to have on hand if the power goes out

Call Toronto Hydro at (416) 542-8000 to report the outage.
Have a battery operated radio for latest updates.
Keep a supply of drinking water on hand.
Keep non-perishable foods that don't require refrigeration around.
Have flashlights available and check that the batteries work.
Fill your car with gas before the storm. You wouldn’t want to run out in the middle of a lashing rainstorm.
Take out a little extra cash. Debit and credit card machines could be down.
Be aware of where your power and water shutoff valves are located, in case you need to get to them in a hurry.

And don't seek shelter from the storm in your basement. It's the first place that will get wet.

My school board isn't there...we're not supposed to get hit bad where i live tho.

Most hip-hop is now keyboard driven, because the majority of hip-hop workstations have loops and patches that enable somebody with marginal skills to put tracks together,...

Unfortunately, most hip-hop artists gravitated towards the path of least resistance by relying on these pre-set patches. As a result, electric guitar and real musicians became devalued, and a lot of hip-hop now sounds the same.
