DJ Quik- Way 2 Fonky
« on: March 31, 2003, 12:33:01 PM »
When DJ Quik dropped Way 2 Fonky in 1992, he was then as he is now, one under rated motherfucker. In the shadow of the Chronic and Ice Cubes peak was this album which showed how Quik had progressed musically from his first album, the platinum Quik is the name. Quik also had a beef with Tim Dogg to deal with, which Quik would adress. Anyways here is the review.

1. America'z Most Complete Artist  4/5

Beautiful way to start an album off. Quik kicks a bangin beat, and he flows vocally over it. Quik makes the case for himself being Americaz Most Complete Artist. The DOC sample is a nice touch too.

2. Mo Pussy  5/5
Feat. 2nd II None

I love this song. The beat starts off funky as fuck, then kicks into a nice rythym. Quik flows smooth like usual, and the chorus just seals the deal.

3. Way 2 Fonky  4.5/5

This is the song where Quik ripped Tim Dogg to bits and pieces. The beat starts off wierd, but by the time the chorus arrives the synths are kickin in big time. Quik switches up the vocals too.

4. Jus Lyke Compton  5/5

If you havent heard this song, you are not a west coast fan. End of story.

5. Quiks Groove 2  5/5

One of my favourite Quiks grooves. I love the flute.

6. Me Wanna Rip Ya Girl  4.5/5

Ive always loved reggae and dancehall, so I was feelin the Caribbean vibe on this track. Quik sings on the chorus with a lil Caribbean accent, but its all gravy. Quik makes anything sound nice.

7. When Youre A Gee  4/5
Feat. Playa Hamm

This is one uptempo joint. The second the beat kicks in, your head will start nodding. Quik  kicks a very creative beat, rock influenced.

8. No Bullshit  3.5/5
Feat. 2nd II None

This is a lil 2 minute flow session. No choruses or nuthin. Its a nice funky beat, (same sample as Eastsidaz Pussy Sells?). My only complaint is that its too short.

9. Only Fo The Money 5/5
Feat. 2nd II None

One of my favourite joints on the album. I LUV this beat. At this point I am in shock that this album came out 10 years ago.

10. Let Me Rip Tonite 4/5
Feat. Sexy Leroy & The Chocalate Lovelites

Nice smooth joint. Quik got some ol skool singers on this one, just smooth, chillin shit. Some singing, huming, backround vocals etc Very relax.

11. Niggaz Still Trippin  3.5/5
Feat. AMG, Hi-C, JFN, 2nd II None

There is nothing wrong with this track. its just that my expectations are so high at this point, that a good song is not as appreciated, This is another flow session. Quik got the entire camp on this one, juss flowin over this track.

12. The Last Word  4/5

Like ya usual Quik outros, Quik talkin some shit, giving out some shoutouts, smashin on some fools,  while a sick beat is bumpin in the backround. This is Quik at his funniest. Tim Dogg and Eiht get it good.

Overall, what can I say? Its a Quik album, which tells you its ATLEAST 4/5. This was my first Quik cd, and ever since i got this, I ve been hooked. This cd is what did it.

4.3/5

"One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree. "Which road do I take?" she asked. "Where do you want to go?" was his response. "I don't know," Alice answered. "Then," said the cat, "it doesn't matter."
