Bad Boys II - Original Soundtrack
« on: September 01, 2003, 08:46:53 AM »

Pros
Mary J Blige, Da Band, Biggie

Cons
Unexciting, unoriginal, unimpressive.

The Bottom Line
Can't recommend this P.Diddy effort. It's just your typical soundtrack with B-side cuts.

Full Review
Here goes, following the release of hollywood's latest blockbuster movie, comes the hip hop soundtrack, featuring a plethora of habitual soundtrackers (Snoop, M.O.P, Jay-Z), flavour of the month beats, producers trying to sing/rap (P.Diddy, Pharrell) and the charts biggest selling artists (50 Cent, Beyonce, Fat Joe). All combined together, like it would of taken years to put together, but sounding like that it was put together last night, after the consumption of a few tequilas.

Everyone knows how soundtrack play, normally just 60 minutes of B side cuts and self promotion. Hell when was the last time you purchased a soundtrack that blew you away? To be fair though if this album can give us some good party joints, get us excited about the movie, and make us smile, than i'm not gonna complain. So lets cross our fingers and press play:

1. Intro - NA

2. Show Me Your Soul - 2.5/5
(P.Diddy, Lenny Kravitz, Pharrell Williams, Loon)
Typical percussion heavy Neptunes track. Puffy and Loon lay some weak rhymes to this uninteresting track, with the only highlight being Kravitz's rock voice.

3. La-La-La - 2/5
(Jay-Z)
Sounds like a track that failed to make Jigga's BP2, which is bad when you consider how many weak filler tracks crept on to that album.

4. Shake Ya Tailfeather - 3.5/5
(Nelly, P.Diddy, Murphy Lee)
If you can stomach the combo of Puffy, Nelly and Murphy Lee, than this track isn't too bad. Pure pop hip hop, is sure to top the singles charts, and is catchy to boot.

5. Girl I'm A Bad Boy - 3/5
(Fat Joe & P.Diddy, featuring Dre)
Fat Joe continues his R & B and hip hop mixture type songs. The beat is pretty tight, and the hook is nice.

6. Keep Giving Your Love To Me - 2/5
(Beyonce)
Beyonce has done much better, in this by the numbers track.

7. Realest N****z - 3.5/5
(Notorious BIG & 50 Cent)
Biggies powerful rhymes hit home as usual, even if it makes you feel a bit uneasy about Biggie and 50 rapping together. 50's verse is gangsta, but his constant whining thru this track is annoying. Not Bad.

8. Flipside - 3/5
(Freeway)
This initially sounds like a Neptunes beat, but instead its Just Blaze, not rivetting though. Freeway comes hard in this very mainstream sounding track, ok to bounce to in the whip but that's about it.
"I'm as, real as they come, the gorillas'll come
Six could chill 'til they come, gotta peel when they done"

9. Gangsta S**t - 3/5
(Snoop Dogg with Loon)
Snoop Dogg breaks off these tracks more than hollywood does sequels. Snoop fans will appreciate this track, but that's about it.

10. Pretty Girl Bullsh*t - 1/5
(Mario Winans featuring Foxy Brown)
Ouch... the beat is a shocker, Foxy is forgetable, and well Mario is awful. This is a very bad track, even for a soundtrack.

11. Model (interlude) - NA

12. Love Don't Love Me - 2/5
(Justin Timberlake)
The beat is really nice, P.Diddy does well, unfortunately Justin lacks any soul or heart on this track. A wasted opportunity.

13. Relax Your Mind - 1/5
(Loon)
Loon's verses on this track are straight corny. Ma$e could get away with crap like this (just), but it's 2003, and Loon should know better than give us this garbage. Skip.

14. Didn't Mean - 4/5
(Mary J Blige)
As always Mary gives a classy soulful performance, on a typical P.Diddy sampled track. This song is very good, in fact, i'd say its the nearly the best on the soundtrack.

15. God Sent You (interlude) - NA

16. Why - 4.5/5
(Da Band)
Finally something fresh sounding on this soundtrack. Great street beat, as Da Band lay some strong rhymes, with overlapping singing and pounding bass blend in the background.
"forget about reading the fineprint, my lyrical content, on some vietnam s**t"

17. Shot You (interlude) - NA

18. Wanna Be G's - 2.55
(M.O.P featuring Sheritha Lynch)
M.O.P come on with there now obligatory high tempo soundtrack joint. M.O.P spit hard as normal, but the beat fails to ignite, leaving this track stuck at the starting blocks. Dissapointing.

Yep, just as we suspected, a crappy soundtrack, with only a couple of bright spots (Didn't Mean and Why). This isn't nothing but a cash-in soundtrack, with a whole lot of poor tracks. Considering the high calibre of artists (some may heavily disagree on 'high'), this soundtrack fails to get the listener excited. Sure its just a quick commercial effort, but the public deserves better than this album. Some people that are after light party joints (Shake Ya Tailfeather, Flipside, Keep Giving Your Love To Me), may see some positives though, so i can't totally write Bad Boys 2 off. And if you like everything that P.Diddy touches, than you'll like this album, however all other people that have ears, may be better off spending there cash on the movie ticket and some pop corn to the actual movie.
