Suga Free – Street Gospel

1. Intro
2. Why U bullshittin’?…Great beat by Quik with a strange touch of “Egyptian” sounding instruments.  It sounds great though.  Suga Free puts down a tight flow.  4/5
3. I’d rather give you my bitch…The beat is tight and Suga Free changes his flow up a lot.  He uses his traditional “slow then speed up” style, but then he sings certain parts.  4/5
4. Doe doe and a skunk…Production sounds like an old school R&B track.  A different kind of weed song.  3.5/5
5. Don’t no suckaz live here…Tight mix of 70’s funk in the production.  Playa Hamm lays down some tight lines on the second verse.  Chorus is hella tight.  4/5
6. Tip toe…Tight, laidback gangsta beat.  DJ Quik blesses the mic along with Suga Free and Hi-C.  All three rip up the track.  Nice hook.  4/5
7. I wanna go home (The county jail song)…A unique track.  The beat is nothing more than someone constructing a beat on a tabletop.  His lines sound like a freestyle, but it’s a tight ass flow.  3.5/5
8. If U stay ready…Classic Quik production.  Suga Free flows well to it.  Playa Hamm appears for a couple decent verses.  The last verse is the best when they trade lines back and forth.  3.5/5
9. Fly fo life…The beat is decent, but Suga Free’s lyrics are off the hook, especially when he flows a whole verse without a break or pause.  I could do without the saxophone in the loop though.  4/5
10.   On my way…Very soft track.  The instrumental sounds like it could be a “Quik’s Groove”.  Suga Free’s slow and fast style is a nice match to the production.  A+ chorus.  4.5/5
11.   Secrets…The production gets your attention right away.  It sounds like a Big Hutch beat.  Suga Free uses another mix of rapping and singing.  Dope hook.  4.5/5
12.   Table interlude…insert
13.   Dip da…Very smooth production.  A nice track which praises his mother and putting down his father.  Suga Free spits some heartfelt lyrics here.  He does the hook perfectly.  5/5
14.   Tip toe (reprise)…instrumental

OVERALL…4.25/5

Suga Free has a very unique rapping style.  He hardly ever carries the same tempo throughout a track, rather he raps slower at the beginning and then speeds up the latter part of the line.  He also uses a mix of singing on some select tracks.  This album was entirely produced by DJ Quik so the production is top-notch.  The lyrical content is heavy on pimpin’ and women, but he puts a very different twist on it.

1. Intro

2. Why U bullshittin’? "She used to work down at the sperm bank but got fired from drinking on the job"..."It's estimated that 9 out of 10 men don't check they spouse but Sugafree would tell your pretty ass to get the fuck out". So many classic Sugafree lines in this song. Great way to start off an album. 4.5/5

3. I’d rather give you my bitch More great one liners. Great song. 4.5/5

4. Doe doe and a skunk It's an alright track, not as much energy as the other tracks. 3.5/5

5. Don’t no suckaz live here Nice melodic beat from quik here. 4/5

6. Tip toe The meat of the album starts here. Quik's beat is one of the best beats he's ever done. It's multilayered with paino chords, electric guitars, synths, a thick baseline, nice crisp live sounding drums. This is a hiphop musical masterpiece. 5/5

7. I wanna go home (The county jail song) I can't describe how dope this shit is. Just real. Sugafree is beating on the table like he does in the Visualism dvd and just tells a story rapid fire about the county jail. His storytelling skills are mesmirizing. 5/5

8. If U stay ready Another masterpiece, as Playa Hamm and Suga Free go back and forth. They definitely have chemistry. My favorite part of the track is the guitar riff by Robert Bacon at the end of the track. Robert Bacon and G1 also co-produce this track along with DJ Quik. 5/5

9. Fly fo life More Suga Free one liners. 3.5/5

10.   On my way Nice r&b style track. I like the flute at the beginning. 4/5

11.   Secrets The baseline just drives this track. Suga Free gets down on this track and even drops a message. 4.5/5

12.   Table interlude…insert

13.   Dip da Again Suga Free shares his storytelling ability with plenty of emotion thrown behind it. He explores his inner demons on this track as the listener finds out how he winds up being a pimp.

14.   Tip toe (reprise) All I can say is  :o this instrumental is  :o :o :o :o Robert Bacon's guitar solo is  :o :o :o . This is the same beat as Tip Toe but just the instrumental with even more elements added to it. This is like the hiphop version of John Coltrane's ascension. I can picture a whole p-funk band playing this. 1,000,000,000/5

Overall: 4.5 mics
