Scratch vs. XXL
« on: February 09, 2006, 08:36:09 AM »
Before Benzino ruined the Source it truly was a hip-hop Bible.  Now the Source has lost most of it's credibility it once had, and even XXL has became oversensationalized and resorted to selling sex (soft porn).  I think Scratch is on top of the print game now.

well they don´t sell Scratch over here but i´ve caught some of their articles and interviews and they´ve definently been on point. i fucks with Murder Dog coz they just don´t give a fuck and their interviews are always entertaining. but i miss Rap Pages coz that Powell guy or whatever he´s called that´s always in hip hop documentaries did a great job at Rap Pages.

I think a mix of XXL and Murder dog would be the dopest, cause i like how murder dog got that undergound shit, but i think they could have a better design!

scratch has had sum really great issues as of late, but I may just feel it more cuz i make beats........its not really sumthing a mainstream rap fan would like at all.......theres not really any features on artists in there, and if there is, it focuses on the production on that artists' album..........but the nas and premo aritcle, as well as the raekwon rza article were the best things I've read in a magazine in a while...........xxl is to much on the trendy side for me, I would roll more with an indy mag like elemental (too bad its so fuckin' hard to find!).......if you mainly only listen to west coast gangsta stuff, i wouldnt really recommend scratch over xxl for u..................

I collect both XXL and Scratch magazines. Both are dope, especially Scratch. If you're really into beats and the producers themselves, Scratch is great.

Everytime i've had the chance, i've picked up Scratch and it is exactly what i look for in a hip-hop magazine.  It's solely based on the music / equipment used, and gives lots of tips.  I'm likely gonna subscribe soon.

XXL and The Source have many other sections relating to fashion and all kinds of bullshit that i'm not concerned with.  Plus the politics involved with each of those two make it difficult to take either one as unbiased.

Out of the ones listed Scratch is in my opinion the best (we don't get Murder Dog though).

But out of all rap mags I like RIME the best.

I haven't bought XXL in a long time, and I only pick up The Source every now and then to see what their bias and racism is about this time around. As long as you don't believe everything they say, you'll be cool. I find it rather amusing to read their bullshit; that article on the downfall of G-Unit was class!

When it comes to serious magazines, Scratch easily takes it even though I think that magazine is far from perfect. Lack of competition is the cause.
