Born in Bothwell in 1944, Jimmy Johnstone joins Celtic as a ball boy and youth player aged 13, after his talent is spotted by a PE teacher with connections to the club
After spells with local sides, Johnstone is signed permanently in 1962, but it isn't until Jock Stein returns to manage the club in 1965 that things take off for Johnstone
Johnstone is part of the team who come from behind to beat Inter Milan in the 1967 European Cup final - the first British side to ever win the competition
As well as winning nine consecutive league titles with Celtic between 1965 and 1974, Johnstone earns 23 Scotland caps, and builds a reputation as a fun-loving but fiery player
The night before a match against England in 1974, Johnstone reportedly takes out a rowing boat with team-mates and has to be rescued - Scotland still win 2-0
Johnstone retires in 1975, but keeps up his close bond with the club and its fans; he is voted Celtic's greatest ever player in 2002
Johnstone is diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2002, and becomes a campaigner for research into the condition, but loses his fight against the disease four years later
Fans arrive at Celtic Park to lay numerous tributes after hearing news of the death of the man they knew as 'Jinky'
