Well duh, I'm aware of that, my point being is no-one clever enough to just do it the other way round, i.e. look at the phone displaying the picture that is to be taken in the mirror and just point the camera part towards them, meaning that they don't look like an idiot holding their phone in their pictures.

How is it more difficult? you can still see exactly what you are taking through the reflection of the mirror, the only way in which it would be more difficult is if you were short sighted or something and therefore couldn't see what the phone was displaying.
