Nepal protesters storm into city
Tens of thousands of protesters have streamed into Nepal's capital, Kathmandu, breaking through a security cordon and defying a day-time curfew.
Police fired rubber bullets and tear gas and beat back demonstrators who were trying to march on the palace.

The crowds dismissed King Gyanendra's vow to restore democracy as inadequate and chanted anti-king slogans.

Opposition leaders have also rejected the king's invitation to form an interim government.

A new eight-hour, shoot-on-sight curfew was imposed on Saturday in Kathmandu and neighbouring areas of the capital.

But thousands of protesters ignored it, forcing their way through a cordon on Kathmandu's ring road to get as far as they could into the city centre.

"We want a republic, We don't want the king any more," the crowds chanted in the biggest demonstration yet in the heart of the capital.

Soldiers blocked approach roads to the palace with tanks, and helicopters flew overhead.

The BBC's Sanjoy Majumder in Kathmandu saw a pitched battle in a narrow lane leading to the palace as police charged protesters.

Ambulances took away around 10 injured people, he said.

"We were marching along peacefully, when suddenly the police fired tear gas shots. I turned and ran," Sammu Pratap Rana - who suffered cuts and bruises - told BBC News.

"Then I fell and a policeman hit me on the back with a baton."

The Associated Press reported that the Norvic hospital in the Thapathali neighbourhood was full of people seeking treatment.

Doctors there said at least four people had been hurt by bullets and more than 40 were injured in baton charges.

Candidate

After more than two weeks of protests and at least 14 violent deaths, the beleaguered monarch gave a nationwide speech on Friday to announce that he intended to restore power to the people.

"Executive power of the kingdom of Nepal, which was in our safekeeping, shall from this day be returned to the people," he said.

He called on opposition parties to put forward their candidate for prime minister.

But after meeting on Saturday, the seven-party opposition alliance rejected the king's offer.

"We will not accept...We will continue the protests," Madhav Kumar Nepal, general secretary of Communist Party of Nepal told cheering supporters in Kathmandu.

The opposition parties complained that the king had failed to address some of their most basic demands, not least the creation of a constituent assembly to decide the future of the monarch.

The general strike that has brought most of the country to an economic standstill is also continuing.

Great hostility is now being directed against King Gyanendra, partly because of his stubborn intransigence but mainly because of his bloody tactics, the BBC's Nick Bryant reports from Kathmandu.

Many protesters will not be satisfied until the king has given up his throne, he adds.

India, which holds considerable influence over Nepal, said the king's move "should now pave the way for the restoration of political stability and economic recovery".

US state department spokesman Sean McCormack said: "We expect the king to live up to his words... We urge the parties to respond quickly by choosing a prime minister."

iraq would just get annexed by iran

That would be a great solution.  If Iran and the majority of Iraqi's are pleased with it, then why shouldn't they do it?

Yeah Nepal could become a pseudo-democracy. The USA wouldnt mind India controlin Nepal as they are 'strong allies with the US in the war on terror' and a friendly mega economy. The US would rather India than the communists in the area havin power. India is gonna SWARM or DOMINATE over all the countries between it and the Chinese provinces. Those little mountainous countries are now caught between two growing giants. India is gonna start snatching territory just like the Chinese have been doing in the area for decades. India's got nukes and a massive army, plus the US will always provide arms to an ally and especially because it needs India due to its proximity to the Middle East, China and SE Asia. These areas I believe will be the focus of US military attention this century. India has been known as the Crossroad of Asia, in ancient times this reffered  to the RELIGIONS (peep: The Story of Monkey Magic yall!)

Fcuk im high.

PEACE!
