that conservative economy is just terrific right about now... its gonna make my taxes in 5 years a whole lot more manageable and i feel like its just really putting our nation in a great position ::)

youre a genius real american  :monkey_piss:

I still don't understand why ANY conservatives support Bush.  Muh'fucka is an embarrassment to the party, and 90% of what he's done goes against everything that the Republicans (supposedly) stand for.  Then again, there was a "Republicans Against Bush" movement before the elections...I remember flyers were being handed out on campus back then promoting the site.

It doesn't matter what year it was from, our basic American values haven't changed. As that show pointed out, countries that are more open, more capitalistic and with less government interference are generally the most well off. That is why France, Italy, and all the other socialistic European nations are so far behind in their economy. Capitalism >>>> Socialism >>> Communism

Conservative values in running an economy are just plain better.

Americans are used to thinking of their country as the most successful on Earth. That's no longer the case: The European Union has grown to become the third-largest governing institution in the world. Though its land mass is half the size of the continental United States, its $10.5-trillion (U.S.) gross domestic product now eclipses the U.S. GDP, making it the world's largest economy.

This is from ABC news, and it was about 1999. Back then, we have the DotCom boom in the Silcon Valley, which went belly up since then, and a lot of problems we were willing to admit because our president was willing to address them. What has changed, we are at war, we are now seen as global bullies, and our president is an ass hole.

Without a doubt open, capitalistic societies generate more wealth.  Minimal government intervention helps too, but are we "just plain better?"  That really depends on your metrics.  Obviously your main metric is per capita incomr, but there are other metrics to choose from.  For instance, GNH or Gross National Happiness, which the US and most countries don't care much about.  Here's an interesting economic analysis of how wealth and other variables effect happiness:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CC49FI/ref=pd_sim_b_1/103-3315359-1445434?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=283155

Basically, if you compare the average happiness to the US to that of other countries, you find there are countries that have higher GNH than we do, despite lower per capita income.  In fact, GNH in the US hasn't changed in decades despite significant improvements in per capita income.

But really, to most people this is commonsense.  We all hear people say "money doesn't buy you happiness." A lot of peope believe that for good reason.  Economic surveys show it's true.  Money buys you happiness only up until a point.  Movement from poverty to middle class elevates happiness, but any movement further up the ladder doesn't.  This is a fact.  It's been tested time and time again.  Promotions and salary increases on average increase happiness for less than 6 months, then people return to their prior state.  In fact, other variables like marriage, community activities, crime, children, leisure time, freedom, sexual activity, etc effect an inviduals happiness far more.

That's not to diss our economy.  The rest of the world could learn a lot from us, but the world is more complicated than you make it out to be.

Another intersting point in regards to this show.  While I thought it raised plenty of good points, especially about red-tape depressing an economy, its kind of funny to think that this show dissed India all day, and now India is one of the world's fastest growing economies and has been since this show aired.  That kills a lot of their credibility.  China is another fast growing economy despite plenty of red-tape and government intervention.  I ain't gonna say this show sucks, but come on, how can you get so excited about it when current events clearly refute a lot of their points.

The EU GDP dwarfs that of the US at $10.5 Trillion (US) anyway.

The EU has the world's largest economy, not the US!

This 'Amerikwa iz da bestest bestest place in tha whole wide wide world' bullshit has no basis.

Sure, but GDP is one of the worst metrics for economic superiority.  It really tells you very little.   Saying GDP is $10T is like saying I just worked out and  500 lbs.  No real meaningful information is conveyed.  DId you lift 500 lbs for one rep or did you lift 50 lbs 10 times? Likewise with GDP, did you generate a GDP of $10T using a workforce of 10,000,000 or was your workforce 1,000,000,000.  There's a big difference.  It's obviously more impressive to generate the $10T with a smaller workforce.

So making general statements about GDP really is pointless.  You have to discuss relative numbers if your going to use this metric and we all know that in the US per capita income is higher than in europe.  Let's do a quick calculation.... In Europe there are more than 800 million people.  In the United States there are about 300 million people.  Now let's go a little deeper:

Europe: 800 million people, $10.5 trillion in total revenue, according to your numbers, I didn't dbl check them.  Also, continents don't have GDP only countries do, so really you are talking about total revenue which is the same as GDP.

United States:  300 million people, $11.75 trillion in GDP.  So actually, doing a quick check, the US with a MUCH smaller population generates more revenue than all of Europe combined according to your numbers.

But using these numbers, we learn...

Europe: $13,125 per capita income

United States: $39,000 per capita income (approximately)

Of course these numbers aren't perfect.  But I just wanted to point out how silly it is to use GDP as a metric for comparing countries or, in this case, regions.  Although if you read my last post I think its just as wrong to use per capita income.

5 Quick Reasons Why America Doesn't Suck
The United States has taken quite a beating lately. Not a military one, mind you. I’m talking about a serious tongue-lashing from damned near anyone who can open their mouth. Some of our readers have expressed concern about Shoutwire becoming IHateAmericaWire. With this in mind, I have compiled a small list of things that I like about America (in no particular order).

1. The Space Programme

I have followed America’s exploits in space since I was able to read. I can remember reading about the Viking landers, the Voyager and the Pioneer probes. The pictures that they sent back captured my imagination. It was America’s space program that inspired me to pursue a career in the sciences.

Doubtless, I am not the only one who has had this experience. On behalf of the thousands of children worldwide who have been inspired by 4 decades of space exploration, I say thank you America.

2. Motion Pictures

Many countries have a film industry, but none are as incredible as America’s. Thanks to Hollywood, I have been catapulted into the front lines of World War II, experienced the disgrace that was the Holocaust, and followed the yellow brick road with Dorothy and company. When I feel bored or blue, Spaceballs is always at arms length to cheer me up. So for all of the times when I’ve needed to watch a film, I say thank you America.

3. Research and Development

Most of the things that surround me in my everyday life would not have been possible without America. From computers to cars, microwaves to monitors, the United States has helped mould them into what they are today.

Let’s face it. America is a rich nation with lots of smart people. They have great ideas, and the cash to bring them to fruition. I think sometimes people take for granted that much of the modern world was brought to us by America. Tonight, when I surf the internet on my conceived-in-America computer, I’ll say thank you, America.

4. Freedom

America doesn’t have a monopoly on freedom. Hell, some country’s citizens are more free than Americans. However, none are more vocal about their love for freedom.

When I was growing up, I watched a lot of American television. Characters like Hulk Hogan, G.I. Joe and others made it seem like Americans valued freedom above all else. My young, impressionable mind soaked this concept up like a sponge. Today, I still value freedom and refuse to take it for granted. Thank you, America.

5. National Identity

Canada and America share a border, a language, and an economy (pretty much). Our societies are heavily integrated. Are we the same? NEVER!! Canadians love to tell others how much we differ from our neighbours. So much so, that “not being American” is a part of who we are. Canada has struggled to differentiate itself from its big brother since Confederation. It is a topic that I love to debate. So America, thank you for being a huge, overbearing neighbour. “We are not Americans” has become our national identity.

Everyone loves to jump on the “I hate America” bandwagon these days. Just remember, no matter what idiocy is spouted by their government, America isn’t all that bad.

have you ever been standing in the woods with your friends, 1am, huddled around a dead hookers body while you vote on whether to bury, or chop and disperse her carcass?
