Check the current issue of Maxim:

They have a 2-page story on pages 58 & 59.

They say that MS-13 is about 60,000 deep spread out over the U.S. and Central America.  They are primarily composed of Salvadoreans.

They don't say if they are the biggest, but they are considered the most deadly and violent street gang in the U.S. (and likely the world).  The 18th Street Gang is right there with them though.

They started up in the early 80's in L.A.'s MacArthur Park.

The name: "MS-13 stands for Mara Salvatrucha 13.  'Mara' for 'gang,' 'Salva' for El Salvador, 'trucha' for 'fear us,' and '13' to signify the letter M (the 13th letter of the alphabet), a tribute to its early alliance with La Eme, the Mexican Mafia.

^ This all came from the current Maxim issue (October 2006) in which they quote the FBI which apparently has created an "MS-13 National Gang Task Force" dedicated just to deal with MS-13.

MS is everywhere. They are real political these days though because of the huge deportation rate. They go after big fish, they're starting to  stray away from pety street shit. Whoever said there's no MS in Northern California ain't out there like that. Their main block in San Francisco is 20th street in the Mission District. The biggest Sureno set is a block away on 19th. They use MS-13 due to their alliance with the Surenos which initially comes from the prison officials and generals that control that part of the country. Not all MS are allied with Surenos however, especially in many parts of LA. Over the years some connected because of politics, that's why street gangs right now are all fucked up to the core, bangin these days is the most stressful thing you could be a part of. Initially MS was created to protect themselves from Surenos, so go figure. Them muthafucaz fuck wit real drug lords in South America and distribute to anywhere and everywhere. Don't be surprised to find out that some of ure more famous gangs like the Crips get their work from these cats although they're not even supposed to be cool wit em like that, it's business. Some shit doesn't even need to be mentioned, but put it this way.. on the street level, who do you think alot of the terrorist malitias in the Middle East fuck with when it comes to America? It ain't the blacks, whites or the asians!

Fire Kills 103 Gang Members in Honduras Prison

SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras (Reuters) - A huge fire at a prison in northern Honduras killed 103 inmates on Monday, all of them members of a violent street gang the government has targeted in a controversial crackdown.

Police said the early-morning fire at the prison in the northern city of San Pedro Sula followed an explosion caused by a short circuit. Some inmates speculate prisoners threw a homemade incendiary device, or fire bomb, in the gang members' cell area.

The fire spread rapidly through an area housing members of the infamous Mara Salvatrucha youth gang. Most died from suffocation and about 25 more were being treated in hospital.

About 50 bodies, many of them charred, lay in rows on the floor of an outhouse in the ramshackle jail. Most were semi-naked and bore tattoos often sported by Central American gang members.

It was the worst jail disaster in Honduras and the second time that dozens of gang members have been killed inside a Honduran prison in a little over a year. Inmates complained that security forces were slow to help on Monday and family members suspected it was no accident.

About 200 people gathered outside the prison and screamed: "Murderers, murderers."

Inmates who survived the fire said guards at the prison shouted abuse at the prisoners trapped inside a burning ward.

"The police were saying to us, 'It's better that you die, dogs,"' said Javier Hernandez, a 23-year-old also known as "Sniper," who is serving 17 years for a gang murder. He said he stayed alive by crawling into a ventilation shaft in a toilet.

Other inmates said guards opened up cells 2 hours after the fire started.

CRACKDOWN ON GANGS

All of the dead were members of the Mara Salvatrucha, one of two dominant gangs that operate in this poor Central American country. More than 1,000 suspected gang members have been arrested and sent to jail since President Ricardo Maduro ordered a crackdown last August.

Maduro cut short a visit to Europe to return home after hearing of the fire.

"The objective is to be sure the necessary investigations are carried out immediately," Maduro said in Rome, where he met with Pope John Paul.

Gang members are often housed together in prisons because of frequent clashes with other groups of inmates. Under tough anti-gang legislation, suspected gang members are put in prison while they wait for their trials on charges ranging from murder and drug smuggling to robbery or "criminal association."

Prisoners said most of the people who died in the fire, about 60 percent, were in jail for "criminal association" and not because they had been charged with any crimes.

"Why was the fire only in the area of the gang members? Why wasn't it in another area where the other prisoners are?" asked Sara Gomez, the mother of a Mara Salvatrucha member.

The Mara Salvatrucha was formed in Los Angeles in the 1980s by Salvadoran immigrants and spread from there back to Central America. Its members are identified by indigo tattoos, often on their faces.

In April of 2003, 68 people were killed -- most of them gang members -- at another prison in the northern city of La Ceiba.

Then, a riot began with gang members and other prisoners attacking each other, but most of the victims were killed when a fire was set deliberately by one group of prisoners and when security forces burst in and opened fire.

More than 50 officials, army soldiers and police officers have been charged in connection with their roles in that incident. Attorney General Ovidio Navarro said an investigation had been ordered into the latest tragedy.

Vaijo Arnas Strom, a Finnish evangelical priest and ex-convict who works in the jail, said the theory that the fire was started by a short circuit was believable,

"This is no surprise. The place was full of cables, a mess. People had everything wired up in there, TVs, fans, air conditioners. There were too many people in there."

San Pedro Sula has been a center of street gang violence in Honduras. Since Maduro launched his crackdown, at least 10 decapitated bodies have been dumped in streets across the country with warning messages attached to them.

Police blame the gangs, but gang members say the security forces are doing it to justify their campaign.
