Very True.  Couldn't you include Naughty By Nature as well?  Wasn't Latifah instrumental in getting them put on?  What about Brand Nubian? Arrested Development?

Native Tounges movement was incredible, really carried the torch for Zulu Nation and such.

The Native Tongues Movement was basically a clique of Hip Hop artists from the 80's and 90's that were pretty much comprised of those groups that Blaq_Sinattra mentioned.  They more or less were based on Hip Hop that was on a more positive / conscious tip.

They were an extension / progression of Afrika Bambaataa's Zulu Nation Movement which was founded on these 15 beliefs:

15 Beliefs[1]:

Belief in the Abrahamic God
Belief in the validity of the Bible (Old and New) and Qur'an
Belief that the scriptures have been tampered with
Belief that history textbooks and other educational materials include white supremacist doctrines
"We believe in truth whatever it is. If the truth or idea you bring us is backed by facts, then we as Amazulu bear witness to this truth. Truth is Truth."
Belief that religion should not make adherents into a "slave or zombie", but should instead make them a "fighter for Freedom, Justice, and Equality for all Human Beings."
Belief that racism is attempting to destroy civilization
Belief that humanity must stop destroying the environment (see environmentalism)
"We believe in the mental resurrection of the dead. There are many of the Human race who are blind, deaf, and dumb to the knowledge of Self and others and we feel the ones who know should teach."
Belief that mathematics is the foundation for all reality
"We believe in the seen and what is to be known of the unseen. We believe in the Power of the mind, and that knowledge is as infinite as God himself."
Belief in equal justice for all
Belief in peace unless provoked
"We believe in Power, Education in truth, Freedom, Justice, Equality, Work for the people and the upliftment of the people."
"The Universal Zulu Nation stands for: KNOWLEDGE, WISDOM, UNDERSTANDING, FREEDOM, JUSTICE, EQUALITY, PEACE, UNITY, LOVE, RESPECT, WORK, FUN, OVERCOMING THE NEGATIVE TO THE POSITIVE, ECONOMICS, MATHEMATICS, SCIENCE, LIFE, TRUTH, FACTS, FAITH, AND THE ONENESS OF GOD."

Zulu Nation / Native Tounges really were the embodiment of Hip Hop.  They took the shit SERIOUS.  Also, Oklin, you can add J Dilla to the list of not being here w/o the Native Tongues.  I believe he basically got his start producing with ATCQ as apart of the production crew "The Ummah" which is credited on their post Midnight Marauders catalog.

Yeah, it's basically saying that if you support love, peace, equality, and unity, you can join the club.  Just the mention of validity of both the Bible and the Qur'an is meant to bring everyone together, in my opinion.

But once you understand that foundation, you can really start having an appreciation for groups like ATCQ, Jungle Brothers, De La, etc.  They were all intelligent people that really had knowledge and a purpose behind their music.  Also, the music in itself was extremely dope which is just icing on the cake.  Both their ideology and musicianship has been huge in the progression of Hip Hop and it's still prevalent today. Even with mainstream media doing everything in it's power to pigeon hole and propagate ignorant bullshit ass excuses for "Hip Hop".

^^ Which does make it a sad fact the influence of the Native Tongues is dying down somewhat these days. In fact, I figured Blaq Sinattra made a pretty logical statement, easy to come by. Well, I guess not.
