DJ Quik - Born and Raised in Compton: The Greatest Hits (2006)
« on: January 16, 2007, 06:39:16 PM »

This is my first album review, tell me what you think.

I wasn't around for the G-Funk/P-Funk Era...Well i lie i was around, but you know england, ignores the movement with the dope shit in the US. So back in 2006, i copped this, it's a compiliation of some of his greatest hits in the 90's...My first album from his was trauma, i was feelin' his flow so i had to step back in time and check out what he did.

1) Born And Raised In Compton - An easy flow to kick off the greatest hits album, one of the hits that brought DJ Quik under the limelight back in the day, easy kicked rhymes, simple to understand, not too fast, not too slow, it's a great way to start off the album with a tune that introduces where he's from, what he's about and what he can do with a dope beat :D.
4.5/5

2) Quik Is The Name - Quicker upbeat tune, hook's simple and catchy, nothing too complicated. The rhymes are all good, still speaks clearly and good enough to understand, though i wouldn't recommend it to anyone who's new to hip hop, as life goes by you better learn to listen to people speak fast or you'll be left behind reallll soon. Average flow, good beat, nice hook.
4/5

3) Tonite - OH MAN! The moment i first heard this track start, it hit me straight in the heart, i got a big soft spot for these smooth beats, feels like i was in butlins again partying...Just close your eyes, think back to a decent night, maybe when you first scored a decent girl? About to go out? Etc. It's the right beat to start of a saturday like no other. But anyway back on topic, this hook is one of my favourites of all time. Quik flows over the beat well keeping on tune, it's like they say, if you've got a killer beat, nigga you BETTER have killer rhymes otherwise it's a waste.
4.5/5

4) Loked Out Hood - Heh, your average story in the life of DJ Quik lol, there's no hook in this so that's a kind of downside for me, the beat goes well with the story, it's just another day in Compton, i don't know myself how hard it'd be to rhyme about your average day so i'm giving props to Quik on this one. To me, it's ite. But if i was flicking through my mp3 for fav tracks i'd want to listen to, this wouldn't be one of them.
3/5

5) Way 2 Fonky - "Oh yes i'm new and improved into a funky ass groove, my name is Quik and i'm smooth and i'm making your ugly bitch move! I'll NEVER forget that line! You can't hate on this track, you know he's tooooo funky! When i get a car remind me to start bumping this through england to college, it'll bring the peeps to back in the day :D. If there was a track i'd strongly recommend you to ever listen to, it's this...
5/5

6) Jus Lyke Compton - Time to teach the thugz what it's like in other hoods, hell when i heard this i was surprised like hell that back then like Oaklin, was actually just as bad as Compton, outta america i got the impression Compton could pretty much be the worst place you'd want to visit for a holiday...Well just goes to show never underestimate other parts of countrys. Anyway, for some random reason it felt kinda xmas'y, don't ask why, it's just the first thing i'd think of when i hear this. You can never be safe whereever you go eh?
3.5/5

7) Dollaz + Sense - Could be my favourite beat of all time? This is the first track i'll bump with a car, it's a straight banger!!!! After trauma this was the next track i listened to, on DJ Johnny Blaze's mixtape. From start to finish i've admired Quik's flow...one or two lines that stuck out from? 'Wackass actor, movie script killa, fool don't you know? QUIK IS STILL THE NIGGA! And this next one...Heh...
" Giving your set a bad name with your mis-spelt name, E, i, h, t, yeah should i continue? Yeah you left out the G 'cause the G ain't in you! Can you honestly look me in the eyes and say that wasn't genius? Lol. My fav track outta the whole album...Alongside with...
5/5

8) Summer Breeze - I first heard this on dubcc.com, throw it up for the westside throw back joints! Right in the middle of summer time before i'm about to take my driving lessons, bright sunny day, i had to hear it, my GOD. Have you ever thought back onto your childhood and missed those days where it was so easy with life? Where you made a great friend? First time you went on a bouncy castle and wrestled on it? It set me back to those moments with Quik's first verse about his childhood. He's second about being a teen is where i am now, hell every now and again even i start gazing off into outside just appreciating life, bright day, etc. Got rid of all the bad seeds in my life...No stupid pregnant bitch callin' on me no more, it felt good to be loose of the chains. Infact what the hell, back on point. He's 3rd verse i can't say i've been through yet, but in short the beat is BANGIN', the flow is just as smooth if not smoother, it's the type you roll down your windows and ride on the motorway to yo homie's party. Oh and on a side note, the hook will always be with me 'till the end of time  8) I gotta resist singing this outloud in mcdonalds
5/5

9) Hand In Hand - In this, the beat was summer time like again, Quik's verse at the beginning kicked off the tune well, cue killer hook and you've got a nice hit. The theory behind this song is kinda right...Without money you can't really get women without them leaving you, power comes from the money too lol. 2nd II None's verse was ite, this was the 1st time i heard him so i wasn't amazed about his flow. Felt kinda average, but i'm not longing this review anymore, you lot must be sick reading this wall of txt lol.
4/5

10) Down, Down, Down - For me this where the low point kicks in for the album, every album has it. You can kinda 'bop' your head to the beat, kinda quiet track for me lol unlike his other uptight quick or relaxed and well volumed tracks. This is average in my eyes, some of ya'll might disagree but you know, it's just how i feel. Sorry :(. The only real thing i can really appreciate is the collab effort. The rhymes could have been alot worse believe you me.
3/5

11) You'z A Ganxta - And once again the album hits a high point, this is where Quik seperates himself from the gangsta and re-assures all his fans and haterz he's a musician. I'd place this tune next to summer breeze, I love the way Quik makes summer like tunez, i won't be bored come the next heatwave  Btw as he says near the end, it was dedicated to the two most prolific writers in Rap history, Tupac Shakur, The Notorous B.I.G and some next dude who lost his life in a party, now why doesn't everyone just get along in Hip Hop? It'll never happen, but for now just gotta kill the beefs bit by bit. This to me is one of his strongest pieces of music to date, and it'll stay that way.
5/5

12) Pitch In Ona Party - Not a high point, not a low point, not average, just good in my eyes. Lol the little talk to his mum made me laugh a bit, maybe one day Quik'll make a song without cussin' in it? Naaaaaaaa XD. The hook is ite, beat ite, rhymes? Ite...No complaints and nothing to make it stand out to be honest.
3/4 outta 5...Can't decide sorry.

13) U Ain't Fresh! - For a sec i thought this was another diss track, it was just random i think? Well this was another low point for me on the album, average flow, average beat, average hook, i probably wouldn't remember this track a good 3 months if i got rid of the album *God forbid*
3/5

14) Do I Love Her? - Probably my fav Quik and Suga Free collab, it starts off average, as time goes by it gets better, Quik's first rhyme i wasn't feeling :(. The hook? I love it lol, 24/7 when i'm with my peeps we always speaking about gyals, what she rated? She worth it? Etc...Suga free kinda stays on beat for once, but throughout i love what he says, makes me laugh, reminds me of a true pimp, is he for real? :o...Plus his last line about the car thing killed it  The hook and rhymes saves the beginning and first verse.
4/5

Honest feedback appreciated :).

Nice review - lol at Butlins and bouncy castles, but I know what you mean about that feeling Tonite gives you (no homo)  ;D

If you've never heard "We Still Party" from the Rhythm-al-Ism album, download it (or PM me). It's probably my favourite Quik track for the same reasons you talk about there - takes me back to younger days lol.

This seems like a good enough album, but for me every Quik CD is a must-own, which kinda means you don't neccessarily need a greatest hits. Looks good for an introduction though.
