I think some of ya'll need to define your definition of classic. To me an classic album is one you can play from start to beggining without skipping a trak. And one that you can play for days and not get tired of it. 2001 is far from that. . .
Rest In Peace!

the first Chronic had Snoop, Kurupt, Rage, RBX all great MC's at the time and DOC doing alot of the writing so the lyrics were dope, 2001 suffered from poor lyrics even though it had great production some of the songs were filler material

I think it's cool to say this album isn't classic cause it's so popular and fresh in public consciousness. In 15 years when detox has been out for 5 years, there'll be someone talkin'  "dude tell my homey detox is the shit" and we'll be like "2001> Detox" or some such shit.

forget the videos, forget the buzz, forget the controversy, forget dre as a person, forget that eminems white, forget whatever bullshit you have stigmatized with this record and listen to the album and seriously explain how this isn't classic.

ackrite-at times, dre's beats will be 'lacking' to focus on the MC. truly great producers know when to turn the music down so the MC is supported by the beat. hitt RIPs this shit and the guitar line on this is stellar.

murder ink-not some shit to chill and coast to like most good west coast music but the bass, drums and Hitt's verse DO the damn thing.

pause 4 porno, i could have done without. outside of that, this is a very subtle record but a nigh immaculate one. it's alot more low-key than the first chronic, not as flashy or in your face. alot of laid back intelligent grooves that don't emngage you immediately but that are certainly timeless( for example, when i was 12-13, 'light speed' used to be a skipper. not that I'm older, it's one of my favorites. you know an albums classic when it can grow with you and vice versa. here's 8 years later and i have a new favorite track like it came out a month ago.)

AND if you really wanna get qualitative, add up how many classic minutes the chronic is and how many classic minutes 2001 has, and even with your alleged 'filler', 2001 has as much classic material on it as the first chronic. it's a huger album.

the lyrics are amazing, it's the topics that are stagnant and even that is intentional.

NOT as good as the chronic, i agree. but classic? definitely. changed the game and pleased the west, who else can still do that?

I can't believe SIAM is being mentioned in this post. SIAM is a west coast classic, one of my favorites but to expect anyone east of arizona to even consider this as a near classic is laughable. dre used stagnant topics on purpose, whereas Kurupt doesn't know anything else.

Definently a classic, it's not perfect due to some filler on the second half of the cd, but as I play it at least once every few weeks it has to be classic.

thanks vance.back at you.

and miss nwa whoorider, if you didn't get the impression from my post. a classic is an album that has at leasta  few tracks that make you say 'damn this shit's bangin', is over-all a consistent cohesive piece(usually an album in which the whole is greater than the sum of its parts) is addictive AND has long term replay value.
