What Really Happenned In Iran
« on: April 06, 2007, 04:11:13 PM »
Released sailors tell of ordeal
Royal Navy personnel seized by Iran were blindfolded, bound and held in isolation during their 13 days in captivity, the crew have said.
They were lined up while weapons were cocked, making them "fear the worst", one of the 15 freed sailors revealed.

The crew were told that if they did not admit they were in Iranian waters when captured that they faced seven years in prison, a press conference heard.

Opposing their captors was "not an option," they said.

And after the 15 marines and sailors were seized they were subjected to random interrogation and rough handling, and faced constant psychological pressure, they said.

The navy has already begun a review of the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Let me be absolutely clear, from the outset it was very apparent that fighting back was simply not an option
Royal Marine Captain Chris Air

Royal Marine Captain Chris Air, 25, from Altrincham, Cheshire, said they had seconds to make a decision when confronted by the Iranians while carrying out a routine operation.

"We are aware that many people have questioned why we allowed ourselves to be taken in the first place and why we allowed ourselves to be shown by the Iranian authorities on television.

"Let me be absolutely clear, from the outset it was very apparent that fighting back was simply not an option".

"Had we chosen to do so then many of us would not be standing here today. Of that I have no doubts".

Had they resisted there would have been a fight they could not have won, he said.

"Fighting back would have caused a major international incident and an escalation of tension within the region," he said.

Iraqi waters

Two of the crew read out a prepared statement to the press conference at the Royal Marines Barracks at Chivenor, in north Devon.

Lieutenant Felix Carman, 26, of Swansea, south Wales, said the sailors and marines were on an operation on 23 March, 1.7 nautical miles from Iranian waters, when they were captured.

Cpt Chris Air said the crew had made it clear they were on a "routine operation allowed under a UN mandate" but the Iranians had a "planned intent."

Someone said, I quote 'lads, lads I think we're going to get executed'
Royal Marine Joe Tindell

"Some of the Iranian sailors were becoming deliberately aggressive and unstable."

Their boat was surrounded by six boats and rammed and they were trained with heavy machine guns and weapons.

The officer in charge Lt Carman said they were taken to a prison in Tehran where they were stripped and dressed in pyjamas.

They were kept in stone cells, sleeping on blankets and held in isolation until the last few nights and frequently interrogated.

Lt Carman said they were given two choices.

"If we admitted we had strayed, we would be on a plane back to the UK soon. If we didn't we faced up to seven years in prison".

The only woman in the group, Leading Seaman Faye Turney, believed for at least four days that she was the only one still being held.

"Like all of us she has been exploited," Cpt Air said.

Royal Marine Joe Tindell told how they feared for their lives in prison.

"We had a blindfold and plastic cuffs, hands behind our backs, heads against the wall. Basically there were weapons cocking. Someone, I'm not sure who, someone said, I quote 'lads, lads I think we're going to get executed'."

"After that comment someone was sick and as far as I was concerned he had just had his throat cut."

Lt Carman said they were only allowed to gather for a few hours together, in the full glare of Iranian media.

He said they only learned they were going to be released when they watched the Iranian president on TV.

"There was a huge moment of elation," he said.

Iranian TV has said it expected some of the British sailors would come under pressure from the UK government when they returned home to change their story.

The navy's review will look at the the circumstances surrounding the incident and the wider rules of engagement for UK forces operating in the area.

iraq would just get annexed by iran

That would be a great solution.  If Iran and the majority of Iraqi's are pleased with it, then why shouldn't they do it?

Lmao at this, well I feel laughter and I also feel seething rage, the growing condemnation that this has received compared to the publics pathetic compliant apathetic stance to what those people at the torture camps are being inflicted with, no public condemnation of the alberto gonzalez memo which approves the use of torture and one memo which even discusses the idea of crushing kids testicles. Never mind that though, these are evil iranians and only such people would conduct themselves in this way.

P.S The response was not directed at you Don but more so at the general hypocrisy and double think from the public

you may think its a hiprocacy to talk about the standard of iranian detention facilities, but if people were to believe the iranian media the captured sailors were living a life of luxury in iran, when in reality it was very very different.

all the stuff that the iranians released was very questionable so i'm not entirely suprised, like faye's letter...it looked like it had been written by someone who mother tongue was not english. the fake smiles, the slowed down frames with no sounds. but respect to the guy who did the map presentation for not admitting being in iranian waters, he said he was in iranian waters 'apparently' because that is what he was told by the iranians.

Of course, you would have to be an idiot to be believe that when any soldiers are in the custody of another army that they are not going to be treated badly but it's kindergarten stuff in comparison.

Its obvious they were told to change their story...i saw the video and the guy was reading off of a paper!  ::) ::) ::)

If it was a true story then he would have looked straight in the camera and told the story in full details.  This was the fakest confession i had ever seen.  Even then, what they explained was not anything bad at all.  They were captured and of course they would put you in different cells and interogate you.  I'd like to see what US & UK would have done if iranians were close to their borders.  I don't get this whole proving if they were in iranian waters or not,  if anyone owns that body of water, its iranians.  I love how they think its their right to just do whatever they want and interfere with that part of the world.

I'm sorry, but how naive are you? If someone prepares a speech, that automatically means he's lying? It's wrong for him to write things down so he can keep a decent structure during the speech? I can tell you've never stood in front of an audience for a speech or anything likewise...

It's not like the sailors were acting on behalf of the UK government. They were sent to the Persian Gulf by a UN mandate. The Iranian government knew they were gonna be there, but they acted like they had no clue. The Iranians should have just escorted the UK sailors out of their waters (which was never confirmed if they were even in Iranian waters), but instead, they arrested them like the sailors were participating in some sort of espionage.

I don't understand why people think they changed their story. Because the female sailor said something different last week? There was only her testimony and she was still in custody while she gave it. I don't see why people think Iran isn't capable of doing some shit like this. Citizens in the US don't trust the government, so what's the difference with the Iranian government? I mean, the armed forces leader Khamenei has more power than the Iranian president himself.

So what is wrong with inspecting boats bound for iraq? should we just leave the waterways open and allow weapons and explosives to be smuggled into iraq without any checks? whether your for the war or not surely you must agree reducing the availablility of tools used to instigate voilence is a good thing in a country where voilence only leads to more voilence, its a vicious circle which needs to stop, iran should be helping us do that instead of supplying explosives to shia miltias. On the very day our sailors came home 4 soldiers died in a roadside bomb and guess where the the explosives originated from?!?

LOL it's already been documented that the U.S special forces are already in Iran, it's already been documented that the CIA are co-ordinating terrorist groups within Iran. in light of this if your the iranian coastal guards and you have spotted commandos in disputed waterways what are you expected to do? Every time you make some reasonable comment trauma you make another 10 vitriolic delusional comments.

This was not a 10 min. presidential speech...they were just explaining what happened there and it was a very short one.  Why would you need to write it down?  He was like they blind folded us (look down in paper) then they interog..(look down on paper) -ated us. LoL
I understand what you say about a speech but come on, this guy was reading 2 lines and he looked down on the paper every 5 seconds.

That only tells you he's an inexperienced speaker. Seriously, because he had it jotted down and reading his notes he was lying? Haven't you ever done a presentation in class or anything?

its not just that their speaches would've had to have been cleared beforehand by the MOD so they don't inadvertently release sensitive information
