De La Soul - Say No Go
« on: April 07, 2007, 06:12:46 AM »
This song just came on my mp3 player on 'random' while was wlaking to the chip shop.

Why did it become cooler for rappers to make songs about selling crack than songs trying to dissuade people from using it?

Most of today's rappers are dicks.

Dope Hall and Oates sample too.

But yeah good point.  "White Lines" by Grandmaster Flash was another classic anti-dope song.  Lots of other groups were anti-drug but they they didn't outright say "don't do it".  Like Q-Tip had that line "I am not an invalid, although I used to smoke the weed out.."  insinuating that he would be an invalid if he still smoked.  And a group like Tribe could say things like that and it never came off corny or preachy.

Looking back, it would have good to have more big artists that didn't endorse over the top drug use just for a little counterbalance.  Don't get me twisted, some of greatest times in my life involved smoking blunts and listening / creating music so I'm not saying it was bad.  I just think it would have been good overall to have some more mainstream artists that weren't propagating that lifestyle.

LOL, think about if all the rappers were promoting smoking crack instead of weed in the 90's.  Shit would be MAD fucked up, lol.
