POMONA, Calif. -- Police took at man into custody Tuesday in connection with a burglary after the suspect's prosthetic leg fell off during a chase.

Police said the burglary occurred at about 3 a.m. at the Pomona Ranch Market. The burglars allegedly attempted to steal an ATM from inside the store at 2277 North Garey Ave.

A man smashed a store window, connected a chain to the ATM, and used a pickup to pull the machine, which was bolted to a concrete floor, police said.

"They backed the truck up, broke the window with the chain, tied it around the ATM machine, and then just dragged it through the window," said Tom Zvoda, a supermarket employee. "It took a pretty good jolt to pull it out of the floor."

The driver fled on Garey Avenue with the ATM in tow, detectives said.

An officer saw the pickup leaving the area and followed it to a residential neighborhood. The driver stopped after entering a street with no outlet.

Police said one of the occupants, identified as 46-year-old Gregory Daniels, attempted to run, but his prosthetic leg detached on the street. He was taken into custody.

"It appears he had some difficulty with a prosthetic leg that failed him or somehow became disconnected," said Sgt. Rick Baker of the Pomona Police Department. "An officer was able to take that gentleman into custody without any struggle or incident."

Police said another person remained at large Tuesday night.

Authorities did not say how much money was in the ATM.
