        THE HUNT FOR suspects spanned the Atlantic early Thursday when police in the northern German city of Hamburg, acting on a tip from the FBI, raided an apartment where two of the suspected hijackers are believed to have lived. One man was detained for questioning, police said. A veiled woman also was seen being led from the scene by police, but the police statement did not mention her.
      Gerhard Mueller, the chief of the state police in Hamburg, said the man was detained pending an investigation. Mueller did not offer information about the man’s age or nationality.
      “He had a profession that appeared to be very interesting to us,” Mueller said, but he declined to give further details.
      The apartment is believed to have been listed as the home address of two men who underwent flight training in Florida last year in preparation for Tuesday’s attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center.
      Authorities in Thailand and Mexico also said that they had been alerted by U.S. authorities to be on the lookout for individuals believed to have been involved in the attacks, the BBC reported Thursday.
     
7,000 FBI WORKERS ON CASE
      The raid came as the FBI committed about 4,000 special agents and 3,000 support personnel to what promises to be the biggest criminal investigation ever, aimed at finding who was behind the attacks.  
 
 



        About 400 FBI laboratory specialists are working at crime scenes in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. In all, one in four FBI employees were working on the investigation, The Washington Post reported.
      U.S. law enforcement officials, who spoke with NBC News on condition of anonymity, said that they have identified some 18 hijackers, all of Middle Eastern descent, who are believed to have died in Tuesday’s attacks after taking over the four airliners that crashed.
      Separately, the Associated Press quoted unidentified law enforcement officials as saying they have gathered evidence linking the attacks to Osama bin Laden, the America-hating Saudi dissident believed to be hiding in Afghanistan, as well as other extremist networks.
     
TRAINED TO FLY IN U.S.
      At least six of the men are believed to have undergone flight training in Florida, according to law enforcement sources and published reports, and investigators are looking into the possibility that others may have received training at schools in Minnesota and elsewhere.  

   
   
 
 
 

 


      Meanwhile, for the first time there was a report that the hijackers could have been aided by accomplices with airport security clearance. The Boston Globe reported Thursday that a ramp access pass for Logan airport was among the items recovered from a rental car used by the suspected hijackers. The pass would have allowed an individual to walk onto the tarmac and potentially gain access to aircraft parked there.
      So far, authorities have indicated that the hijackers were armed only with knives, but the report raises the possibility that the groups that took over two flights that originated in Boston and crashed them into the World Trade Center could have had additional weaponry.
      The investigation has progressed rapidly in the first days since the attack, producing a number of “credible leads,” according to Attorney General John Ashcroft.
      Locations in Massachusetts and Florida were searched for evidence Wednesday as investigators questioned associates of the suspects and collected evidence related to who was behind the plot to commandeer the four airliners and use them as flying bombs.
      Agents also wanted to prevent the hijackers’ associates from vanishing, FBI Director Robert Mueller said at a news conference Wednesday in Washington.
     
Across the nation, moments of mourning
In Florida, agents and police were fanning out to chase leads on at least four men believed to have undergone flight training there, according to law enforcement sources and published reports. The four, all of whom are believed to have died in the crashes of the hijacked airliners, were identified as:
       Mohammed Atta — Sources told NBC News that the 33-year-old Atta’s name on a passenger manifest drew the

         immediate attention of the FBI because of his suspected links to a terrorist organization. Atta spent seven months last year taking flying classes in a twin-engine Piper Seneca airplane at Huffman Aviation in Venice, Fla., before receiving a commercial license on Dec. 21. The Miami Herald also reported that Atta took flying classes at Palm Beach Beach Flight Training and quoted law enforcement sources as saying that investigators believe he piloted one of the planes that hit the World Trade Center.
Marwan al Shehhi — Sources told NBC that the 23-year-old al Shehhi, who identified himself to instructors as Atta’s cousin, also underwent flight training at Huffman Aviation and graduated at approximately the same time, the sources said.
Ali Muhammed al-Darmaki — Law enforcement sources told MSNBC.com that al-Darmaki, whose age and nationality were not disclosed, had attended Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, though he never completed his training because of bad grades. It was not known how far he got in the course.
Waleed Al Shehri — The Miami Herald reported Thursday that the 25-year-old al Shehril, a Daytona Beach man, formerly held a commercial pilot license.

FOUR OTHERS SOUGHT
      Agents also were reported to be working to track down information on at least four others believed to be linked to the attack:
Adnan Bukhari — CNN and the Miami Herald reported that Bukhari, of Vero Beach, is a Saudi pilot who has been taken into custody. Both quoted law enforcement sources as saying investigators believe he may have had something to do with the attack, and the Herald said he had been linked to a post office box. He wasn’t on the hijacked planes and reportedly was taken into federal custody after the attack. CNN reported Thursday that he was cooperating with investigators.
Ameer Abbas Bukhari — CNN said Bukhari, Adnan Bukhari’s brother, also had a pilot’s certificate. The network said investigators believed both brothers had died in Tuesday’s crashes, but later revised the report to say that Adnan Bukhari was alive and cooperating with authorities without making clear whether Ameer Bukhari is still believed to have died.
Abdulatif A Al-Omari — The Herald said the 31-year-old’s Miami apartment was raided late Tuesday.
Wail M. Al Shehri — The Herald gave no details of why authorities are interested in the 28-year-old from Boynton Beach, but indicated that he is believed to have died aboard one of the hijacked airliners.
      Atta’s former residence near Fort Lauderdale, Fla., was among the locations FBI agents were searching for clues on Wednesday, and agents carted off away eight to 10 boxes of records from Huffman Aviation.
      Agents also questioned employees at a bar in Hollywood, Fla., where some of the suspects, including Atta, apparently spent time drinking and flashing wads of cash, the Miami Herald reported.
      The FBI in Miami also issued a national bulletin for law enforcement agencies to look out for two cars, including a 1989 red Pontiac registered to Atta.
      The raid in Hamburg on Thursday also was believed linked to Atta and al Shehhi.
      A bookkeeper at the school told NBC News on Wednesday that the men, who said they were cousins from Hamburg, Germany, graduated in January.

       Media reports in Germany also lent credence to the suspicions of terrorism experts that bin Laden is behind the attacks. Reinhard Wagner, a top German intelligence officer was quoted in the Bild newspaper as saying that Hamburg was home to Islamic extremists generating cash for bin Laden.
      The effort to prevent any accomplices from escaping led to some apparently errant sweeps on Wednesday.
     
ERRANT DETENTIONS
      Heavily armed FBI agents stormed a Boston hotel at midday looking for suspects while investigators reviewed surveillance videotape in an attempt to retrace the steps of the hijackers of two planes used in attacks on New York and Washington.
      Agents wearing bulletproof vests and carrying shields stormed the 36-story Westin-Copley Hotel.
      Three people were reportedly detained, and the Boston Globe reported that they had been linked to a credit card used to purchase airline tickets for the hijackers. But WHDH-TV, citing anonymous sources close to the investigation, reported Wednesday evening that the three were released after it was determined that they had no connection to the hijacked flights.
      A train that had passed through Boston was halted, evacuated and searched in Providence, R.I. One man wearing a green turban was led away in handcuffs.
      Col. Richard Sullivan, the Providence police chief, said later that the man did not appear to have any connection with the terrorist acts. But he was charged with a weapons violation for carrying a knife, Sullivan said. He remained in custody Wednesday afternoon.
      A Justice Department official told NBC’s Jim Popkin that the department was distancing itself from the train search, saying it was the act of local police who “were not acting on behalf of the FBI.”
      NBC News also reported that two people believed to be connected to the attacks had been arrested in Portsmouth, Va. No details on their relationship to the case were immediately available.
      Earlier in the day, law enforcement officials who spoke to NBC News on condition of anonymity said people were being arrested as material witnesses if they declined to answer questions or otherwise cooperate.
     
CLUES FOUND AT LOGAN AIRPORT
      Within hours of Tuesday’s devastating attacks, investigators uncovered their first leads at Boston’s Logan International Airport.
      U.S. intelligence sources told MSNBC.com that FBI agents had located a car that apparently carried some of the terrorists to the airport, where the two hijacked flights that destroyed the World Trade Center originated.
      Video from surveillance cameras showed that five men, all apparently of Arab origin, left the rented car in an airport garage, said the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity. Flight manuals in Arabic were found in the vehicle.
      The Boston Herald, quoting a source close to the investigation, said the FBI had obtained a warrant to further search the Mitsubishi sedan rented from National Car Rental.
FBI looking to Net for attack clues

      Intelligence officials also said that the FBI has determined that at least two of the suspected terrorists were carrying passports from the United Arab Emirates, a tiny Arabian Gulf sheikdom known as a major banking and commerce center. The Herald reported that the two were brothers and that one was a trained pilot.

        In addition to the five men from the car, authorities said two men apparently flew to Logan International Airport from Portland, Maine, to rendezvous with the rest of the group.
      Portland police Chief Michael Chitwood said the FBI had asked his department to focus on the men, who left Portland on a 6 a.m. USAir flight and arrived in Boston at 6:30 a.m.
      He did not identify the men but said investigators had been able to obtain photos of them from airport security cameras.
      The Associated Press quoted unidentified federal authorities as saying that at least one group of hijackers is believed to have crossed from Canada and had ties to bin Laden. Those officials said they were investigating whether four separate terrorist “cells” were involved in the attacks.

      Terrorism experts both within and outside the U.S. government remained confident that the clues obtained in the United States eventually would lead to bin Laden. He has strong family ties and a group of supporters in Boston, and those connections are now being closely scrutinized, said Robert Fitzpatrick, the former second-in-command at the FBI’s Boston office.
      One of bin Laden’s brothers set up scholarship funds at Harvard, while another relative owns six condominiums in an expensive complex in the Charlestown section of Boston, Fitzpatrick said. Two bin Laden associates once worked as Boston cab drivers, including one who was jailed in Jordan on charges of plotting to blow up a hotel full of Americans and Israelis.
      Investigators are interviewing drivers from Boston Cab Co., where the two known associates of bin Laden once worked, to see if they had ties to baggage handlers, who in turn may have supplied weapons to the hijackers, Fitzpatrick said.
      Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, also said Tuesday that the United States had intercepted electronic messages exchanged by bin Laden supporters after the attacks.
      Government officials confirmed for NBC News that the National Security Agency had intercepted electronic communications from members of bin Laden’s organization.
