Alvin and the Chipmunks sell out

My colleague Erick just sent me a link to a movie poster from the upcoming "Alvin and the Chipmunks" film, which at first look appears to be heading toward the "Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2" league of stunningly horrible children's cinema.

Granted, we haven't seen a second of actual film, but this image speaks volumes. Are these supposed to be gangsta Chipmunks? Are the producers deliberately trying to remodel the characters after Poochie from "The Simpsons"? Will the new Chipmunks sing a hyphy version of "The Witch Doctor"? Is Theodore smoking chronic?

The makers of the latest "Alvin and the Chipmunks" movie seem to be taking the animated characters-with-live action humans "Song of the South" approach, which should be no surprise -- the director and one of the producers worked on the similarly structured "Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties."

In an attempt to ruin all the goodwill he developed with his work in "Chasing Amy" and "My Name is Earl," Jason Lee plays Dave in the film -- and also provides the voice for this summer's equally questionable-looking "Underdog."
