Scorching Heat Possible Cause of 7 Deaths
SoCal Heat Wave Continues

VALLEY VILLAGE, September 4, 2007 - Authorities Tuesday were investigating the deaths of a number of people who may have succumbed to the heat.

The bodies of a couple in their 80s were found in their apartment in the 5100 block of Laurel Canyon Boulevard in Valley Village, near Studio City, on Monday afternoon.

Relatives had called to check on the elderly couple and were not able to get ahold of them. They then went to the apartment and there was no answer that is when they made the call to 911.

When firefighters arrived they say that it was at least 110 degrees inside the apartment.

One of the victims has been identified as 82-year-old Menahem Lugassi. The name of his wife was withheld pending notification of her relatives.

The windows were closed. Neighbors say that all of the units have air conditioner, but they do not know if it wasn't working or if they decided not to turn it on.

The elderly couple lived on the third floor of the apartment complex. Residents say that it gets incredibly hot and the sun beats down on the roof.

The units get unbearable by the afternoon, according to the residents. Neighbors say that Mr. Lugassi was in a wheelchair and the two had difficulty getting around. They are stunned that this happened.

"They are very nice people. The husband was kind of sickly and the wife took care of him. They were nice. Every morning she use to push him around to get out and get a little air. They would then go back in and they did this every morning," says Robert Halsey, neighbor.

According to authorities four people in L.A. County have died from the heat.

Linda Grace Burkhardt died in Lancaster. Officials say she was apparently living in her car.

In San Bernardino county authorities are investigating three possible deaths that are heat-related. Altogether right now seven possible death have been reported.
