Fresh on the heels of his direct-to-video, autobiographical flick Charlie Hustle: The Blueprint Of A Self Made Millionaire, with its accompanying audio soundscape, the King Of Vernacular/Sultan Of Slang, Earl "E-40" Stevens is releasing Loyalty And Betrayal, his most potent-yet-lyrical dose of reality.

The set's first offering, the Nate Dogg-assisted, "Nah, Nah..." (which is already a mainstay at radio) is blowing nationally for the Bay Area native, and that's just a small taste of what the full package truly embodies.

Stellar appearances by hip-hop heavy hitters keep this album bumpin' from start to finish, but it's Earl's always-comical lyrical jargon that makes for the true enjoyment here. Ice Cube appears on the bass-heavy "Behind Gates." Mystikal shines on the too-hype "Clown Wit It." OutKast and Big Gipp of Goodie Mob define their country grammar on the hypnotic neck-snapper "Ham Samiches & Coup De Villes." Too Short and UGK'z' Pimp C divulge a bit of game on the laid-back "DoinÆ A Fool." And Eightball collabs on the fonkay "Ya Blind." The feel-good "Lace Me Up," a duet with 40Æs sister Suga T, is reminiscent of their former hit "Sprinkle Me." The gangsterous "Sinister Mob" has 40 revisiting his early Mr. Flamboyant days. The wicked, "To Whom It May Concern," becomes a true-to-life lesson on record industry politics. Then, there's the smooth "FOMH," which features Devin The Dude, and Click brethren B Legit, followed by the hard hitting "Kandyman," and the bangin' title track that finds E in his finest lyrical form. Finally, in a reunion of sorts, the Click, 40Æs family group, returns to its Vallejo, Calif. soil for the all-too-playalistic "Pop Your Collar."

E-40, (Charlie Hustle, 40 Fonzarelli, or whatever one chooses to call him), is back, and it's evident that this is by far his strongest effort since 1995Æs In A Major Way. With production hailing from Battlecat, Bosko, Rick Roc, Tone Capone, and the above-mentioned cast, Loyalty And Betrayal is destined to finally net 40 Water that much-deserved platinum plaque. It's about time-- oh boy!
