2 different formats that do the samething  in the although in my opinion rar has proven to have more compression options than zip

But wait. can the program that opens zips open rars?

the newest winzip can open rar and zip alike
but winrar can open zip,rar,iso,ace,cab,tar to name a few for years now i prefer just to use one and that's winrar

A zip file compresses the file to a smaller size whereas a rar file just puts all files in a package at the same size.

actually, you have both options (one file or multiple files) with both. rar is slower to create/extract the files, but it gets a better compression ratio compared to zip or gzip
