When you play old Albums...

When listening to some Vinyl Promos the other day it dawned on my that I had largely ignored my CD collection ever since archiving them all to .wav files for backup. After thumbing through some of the cases, I picked out Dr. Dre's "2001" and remembered when it hit the store shelves. All the excitement of a new Dre product was huge and highly anticipated. There was my copy which was stolen, then a copy that was damaged, another one lost and one that I had finally maintained safely, along with a few copies of the Instrumental edition as well. (Love that "Pause 4 Porno" beat!) Throughout each copy I had this incessantly obsession to play that disc inside out everyday, closely examining all of the album's instruments and musical themes and the sonic quality of each track, with every little detail and how each element blended together. Everything else by anyone who wasn't with Dre at the time sounded like second or third at best.

The sound quality on that CD wasn't something I would expect from a rap album. Dr. Dre's talent for mixing, his instrument choices and his ear for audio equipment aren't the norm, making "2001" a sonic standard on its own. Of course, extra credit is due to Bernie Grundman & Brian "Big Bass" Gardner (in which Dr. Dre nick-named him) for their Mastering capabilities. You'll definitely see those Mastering Credits on several Hip Hop & RnB releases.

After hearing it for the 500th time last night, I was reminded of very few releases that completely devoured my attention like that. It still sounded excellent and holds up quite well.

Hope this doesn't sound like a Dre Dick Riding post, but has anyone had those of experiences with an old album?

Regards

Paul
