You can't "silence" a .223, at all.  Also, news reports say 12 rounds were fired.  Doesn't sound like it could've come from anything automatic.

$10,000 is a lot to spend on a gun you're just gonna throw over a bridge, regardless of whether someone's broke or not.  Not to mention all the effort it takes to acquire the gun in the first place.
