Karma's ah mutha fucca.. tell me how that sound,

Look who kiccin' down who buildin's now!

This is how I see it...

I've been in school in the South since 2002, and before I got here, people in L.A. always saw me as a West Coast rap advocate, whether it was at my HS or in the neighborhood. When I got here, I would play nothin but West Coast, especially because I wasn't hearin any of it out here. I felt that our music was just as good, or even better, than what was out in the South at the time...but that the stations and all weren't showin us the love we deserved. I felt then, and still feel that 2000-2001 was the best span of years we've had since 94-96, and I thought we were on our way back.

Fast forward to 2007, and it feels like we've nearly been washed out the game. I feel that The Bay had a major hot streak as far as songs go, and many of their songs could have been major nationwide because they had that universal club feel to them. However, their scene hasn't been puttin out as much catchy music, and the hyphy scene has lost it's steam. L.A. rap hasn't done much of anything different since at least 2001, and even then, that was just a slightly modernized version of what we did in the 90's. Being here in Florida, I realize that 10 years ago, their music sounded like "Come and ride the train" "Tootsie roll" and Luke "Scarred"...but now it sounds like "I'm so hood" "Everyday I'm hustlin"...so why should our music sound the exact same way as it did back then?

I think we just need to re-invent the entire sound, and stop copying other coasts AND stop trying to live off the 90's legacy and come with something fresh. We're washed out the game, so even if we get a single here and there, it won't make shit happen if it sounds like what's out in the South. We see how much Mims did for the East coast with a South-soundin single.

what up TJ.

Got to agree with you, ive noticed lately a lot of new west artists are using early to mid 90's beats for their mixtapes. Which is cool for a minute but gets played out quickly

You have to blame fans too, they create the demand for some of this garbage that gets pumped out, people on this forum are still hoping dogg pound will drop a classic and save the coast...

time to move on

On point as usual R. We really need a rapper not on that gang bangin/gangsta tip to blow up. Just to show some diversity out here. And not knockin that subject matter but something new and fresh.

if the artist can only talk about violence and banging, then the artist is way too one dimensional to start with and does not deserve a chance in the first place.
fortunately, there are intelligent artists out there, that rap and rep LA.

Check out artists like Blu and Exile, and Pacific Division, etc... all making some of the best music the west coast has seen in forever.

Of course people would say he's corny, he's wack, "we want some gangsta shit," etc. But these are the same people who will turn around and whine that the West has no representation. Being a gangster rapper can only take you so far. It was cool as shit in the 90s cuz it was really only the West doing it. Now, everyone is a G.

And no interviewer would ever be that ignorant to ask questions like that... LOL. I understand your point, but it's not like that would be the first and only rapper from L.A. without major gang ties. Think Pharcyde, Murs, Xzibit (yes, Mr. Get Your Walk On started out on so me Underground shit), Tha Liks, Defari, etc. They all came out without Gang ties during the HEIGHTS of Gangsta Rap. So if they could do that then, a rapper could do it now 10 years later. As fans, we dictate where the music goes. If we want it to be all about flaggin' and low ridin' then we will get music like that. But, if we want music that will crossover and open the door once again for the West Coast, we have to demand it and not settle for less. It's time to let the Daz's, Kurupt's, Ice Cube's, etc. and strongly support the Omar Cruz's, Pacific Division's, etc. Gang Banging can still work in your rhymes if you at least keep it fresh, i.e. Game. The reason Game didn't flop like Daz and Kurupt is because, one he's a fresh new face. But 2, Game used a variety of beats that typical West Coast artists aren't known for. He had a much broader appeal and that's what it's about. If you're gonna be a Gangsta Rapper, come with a swagger like Jay Rock. Typical Gangster rappers would sample a Roger Troutman track and be done with it. Jay Rock busting over some NY shit with DJ Envy and Big Mike co-hosting his Tape, now that's smart. We as fans need to demand creativity and originality like this. We cannot just settle for the same old same. If it sounds like 1994, it shouldn't be praised...

That there is definitely true.

I do feel that the sound itself is much more important than people will think though. With Game, he definitely did blow up, and according to the (bullshit on) MTV, he is the 3rd hottest rapper in the game. However....truth is that he really didn't do much for the West Coast itself, mainly because his style was much more East, and at the same time, didn't bring anything new to the table. When NWA and Snoop dropped, they each had their own unique style and sound that the game hadn't heard before, and that's why they are seen as legends. Game came out and made good music, but he was a hybrid of an East Coast mixtape rapper, 2000's commercial rapper, and 1990's West Coast rapper. Therefore, when cats like him come out rappin on East Coast tracks, it's like yeah...we do have dope rappers, but we need to have our own sound...and I'm not sayin he sounded East Coast just because he used lyrics and punchlines and that. He had more of an East Coast accent as well.

TJ definitely speaking on some real shit. The problem is that there are people out here trying to differentiate there selves from the rest of the pack, but no one wants to hear it. I don't complain much but if someone from the coast comes with some different shit we are told to "keep it west coast" Ive done songs and had the whole concept ripped from me. I was the first one to do that whispering shit. 2 years before the ying yang twins did it and got a buncha bullshit that it wasn't gangsta enough. Power 106 supported it, but never really moved on it even though it was a top 5 call out record. So people out here gotta change there attitudes and be open to hear new shit, we cant continue to be expected to rap over more bounce to the ounce typa beats.
I gotta give my hats off to my lil homie bangloose, he's coming with some dope ass club shit, we just need more niggas bringing fun back to rap. Thats why the south is running shit now, the average rap fan lives in the hood, but they dont wanna hear about that shit for a whole album.

Yeah, dude telling some truth. I mean the west got a lot of good artists (Bishop, Crooked, Malone, Juice...) but they donīt get much attention from the people that donīt listen to westcoast rap, the radio stations from the south and eastcoast donīt care about them and tv stations like MTV donīt give a fuck about them too. Thats the fucking problem. Same thing with Dre: seems like everybody thinks "Detox" will be the rebirth for the west but Iīm sure itīs not even going to be a westcoast album.

What the westcoast need is some dude that donīt rap about gangsta shit, lowriders and all that typical shit. IMO Bishop Lamont is the guy with the best chances of a successful carrier and when he  put the attention back to the west the other rappers got better chances to sell their album.

But what I donīt like is that a lot of people donīt respect what Snoop and Game do for the west. Ok, Snoopīs last track was garbage but you must remember how long he is in the game and he still can go plat. And Game did a lot for the west too, put with "DA" an record out that comes closer to a "Classic" like no other westcoast album since years.

lazar, i truly feel you homie! you are saying exactly what i wanted people to get from the song. so dude hit me yesterday and asked me, tj.. why are you dissing, or going at dre, snoop, and dre? i tried to explain to him the best way i could. here is my reply to him..

actually.. i wasn't going at dre, snoop, nor game. i'm actually speaking on how others outside of our region, culture, etc.. view us regarding doc dre. when i spoke on snoop, i was speaking on a situation when we (the young hoggs) were negotiating a deal with a major company, and the head exec there said.. ok. you guys are from the west coast, lets get snoop on your 1st single to certify you guys. Now, not on some hard body type shit ma nigg, i'm from santana blocc compton crip, my niggaz are from nutty blocc compton crip, and my other nigga in the group is from spook town compton crip, and the last is from  neighbor hood east coast crip.. snoop can not certify that! no disrespect to him, but he CAN'T! that's all that was. and last, the game line. of course i wasn't dissing him, cause i just sent him a song for him to get on called "compton high days" right before i made this post. me and dude is cool. but the fact still remains, his last album didn't do the 1st album numbers, cause of his distance from the good doc. he could have been kicked outta the "unit" and dre still involved.. that shit still would have sold!!! could you honestly tell me that a lot of people didn't go get games album, cause it didn't have a so call, "doc dre beat????" they gave his non- involvement a title!!! "wit outta doc dre beat!!!!"

that all said to say, it was more aimed at the media, and the people in these companies who push buttons and make shit happen! as well as the artist here to step up and present something worth pushing the button on. including myself and the hoggs.
