But for real..if a rapper turns Up..and don't have no ties with any gangs..
Just Ur Average "will Smith" kinda rapper, hailing from LA..I.e So Cal would you guys the Fan accept Him??
Or Would Yous say "Dude is Wack"??

I can just about picture the interview

Interviewer:So You From LA.

Rapper:Yeah,SoCal..that's right

Interviewer:SoCal,yeah we know a lot of rappers from,Snoop,DPG..etc..all had Gang Ties.
Do You have Gang Ties??

Rapper:Nope,I Don't.
Not A Lot Of Gang Violence happened round my block!
Just folks working and trying to make a Living!

Interviewer:So You Don't bang,No Affiliations..nothing,and you want to Rap & Rep LA?

Rapper:Yessir!!

^^That may be a lil exaggerated a bit..but i'm Sure ye  would have wee understand of where I'm coming From!

Of course people would say he's corny, he's wack, "we want some gangsta shit," etc. But these are the same people who will turn around and whine that the West has no representation. Being a gangster rapper can only take you so far. It was cool as shit in the 90s cuz it was really only the West doing it. Now, everyone is a G.

And no interviewer would ever be that ignorant to ask questions like that... LOL. I understand your point, but it's not like that would be the first and only rapper from L.A. without major gang ties. Think Pharcyde, Murs, Xzibit (yes, Mr. Get Your Walk On started out on so me Underground shit), Tha Liks, Defari, etc. They all came out without Gang ties during the HEIGHTS of Gangsta Rap. So if they could do that then, a rapper could do it now 10 years later. As fans, we dictate where the music goes. If we want it to be all about flaggin' and low ridin' then we will get music like that. But, if we want music that will crossover and open the door once again for the West Coast, we have to demand it and not settle for less. It's time to let the Daz's, Kurupt's, Ice Cube's, etc. and strongly support the Omar Cruz's, Pacific Division's, etc. Gang Banging can still work in your rhymes if you at least keep it fresh, i.e. Game. The reason Game didn't flop like Daz and Kurupt is because, one he's a fresh new face. But 2, Game used a variety of beats that typical West Coast artists aren't known for. He had a much broader appeal and that's what it's about. If you're gonna be a Gangsta Rapper, come with a swagger like Jay Rock. Typical Gangster rappers would sample a Roger Troutman track and be done with it. Jay Rock busting over some NY shit with DJ Envy and Big Mike co-hosting his Tape, now that's smart. We as fans need to demand creativity and originality like this. We cannot just settle for the same old same. If it sounds like 1994, it shouldn't be praised...

That there is definitely true.

I do feel that the sound itself is much more important than people will think though. With Game, he definitely did blow up, and according to the (bullshit on) MTV, he is the 3rd hottest rapper in the game. However....truth is that he really didn't do much for the West Coast itself, mainly because his style was much more East, and at the same time, didn't bring anything new to the table. When NWA and Snoop dropped, they each had their own unique style and sound that the game hadn't heard before, and that's why they are seen as legends. Game came out and made good music, but he was a hybrid of an East Coast mixtape rapper, 2000's commercial rapper, and 1990's West Coast rapper. Therefore, when cats like him come out rappin on East Coast tracks, it's like yeah...we do have dope rappers, but we need to have our own sound...and I'm not sayin he sounded East Coast just because he used lyrics and punchlines and that. He had more of an East Coast accent as well.

TJ definitely speaking on some real shit. The problem is that there are people out here trying to differentiate there selves from the rest of the pack, but no one wants to hear it. I don't complain much but if someone from the coast comes with some different shit we are told to "keep it west coast" Ive done songs and had the whole concept ripped from me. I was the first one to do that whispering shit. 2 years before the ying yang twins did it and got a buncha bullshit that it wasn't gangsta enough. Power 106 supported it, but never really moved on it even though it was a top 5 call out record. So people out here gotta change there attitudes and be open to hear new shit, we cant continue to be expected to rap over more bounce to the ounce typa beats.
I gotta give my hats off to my lil homie bangloose, he's coming with some dope ass club shit, we just need more niggas bringing fun back to rap. Thats why the south is running shit now, the average rap fan lives in the hood, but they dont wanna hear about that shit for a whole album.

Yeah, dude telling some truth. I mean the west got a lot of good artists (Bishop, Crooked, Malone, Juice...) but they donīt get much attention from the people that donīt listen to westcoast rap, the radio stations from the south and eastcoast donīt care about them and tv stations like MTV donīt give a fuck about them too. Thats the fucking problem. Same thing with Dre: seems like everybody thinks "Detox" will be the rebirth for the west but Iīm sure itīs not even going to be a westcoast album.

What the westcoast need is some dude that donīt rap about gangsta shit, lowriders and all that typical shit. IMO Bishop Lamont is the guy with the best chances of a successful carrier and when he  put the attention back to the west the other rappers got better chances to sell their album.

But what I donīt like is that a lot of people donīt respect what Snoop and Game do for the west. Ok, Snoopīs last track was garbage but you must remember how long he is in the game and he still can go plat. And Game did a lot for the west too, put with "DA" an record out that comes closer to a "Classic" like no other westcoast album since years.

lazar, i truly feel you homie! you are saying exactly what i wanted people to get from the song. so dude hit me yesterday and asked me, tj.. why are you dissing, or going at dre, snoop, and dre? i tried to explain to him the best way i could. here is my reply to him..

actually.. i wasn't going at dre, snoop, nor game. i'm actually speaking on how others outside of our region, culture, etc.. view us regarding doc dre. when i spoke on snoop, i was speaking on a situation when we (the young hoggs) were negotiating a deal with a major company, and the head exec there said.. ok. you guys are from the west coast, lets get snoop on your 1st single to certify you guys. Now, not on some hard body type shit ma nigg, i'm from santana blocc compton crip, my niggaz are from nutty blocc compton crip, and my other nigga in the group is from spook town compton crip, and the last is from  neighbor hood east coast crip.. snoop can not certify that! no disrespect to him, but he CAN'T! that's all that was. and last, the game line. of course i wasn't dissing him, cause i just sent him a song for him to get on called "compton high days" right before i made this post. me and dude is cool. but the fact still remains, his last album didn't do the 1st album numbers, cause of his distance from the good doc. he could have been kicked outta the "unit" and dre still involved.. that shit still would have sold!!! could you honestly tell me that a lot of people didn't go get games album, cause it didn't have a so call, "doc dre beat????" they gave his non- involvement a title!!! "wit outta doc dre beat!!!!"

that all said to say, it was more aimed at the media, and the people in these companies who push buttons and make shit happen! as well as the artist here to step up and present something worth pushing the button on. including myself and the hoggs.

I have to give props to Bigg Steele and TJ Santana for making their statements about the condition west coast rap is undergoing.

I always thought that west coast music would have longevity in the business, until the arrival of the east coast/west coast war between Bad Boy and Death Row. Definitely, it was a time where you were forced to choose a side: you were a gangsta (west coast, Death Row, Snoop/Dre/2Pac) or a hustler (east coast, Bad Boy, Biggie/Jay-Z). Only acts like The Pharcyde, Jurassic 5, Dilated Peoples, Black Eyed Peas, and even Ahmad broke the mold, but underground rap didn't get real hard exposure until after the deaths of Biggie and 2Pac, all because the gangsta glare was too much of an eyesoar.

TJ, your song is convincing for two reasons. One of them is that your illustration of the west coast situation is a parallel domino effect on Chicano Rap. I believe that it is the only genre that still uses gangsta rap in their music, no matter how much or how little they embody the style. I wrote an article called The Chicano Curse explaining the reasons why this genre never gets the respect or recognition it deserves, dating back to Kid Frost and "La Raza." I'll send you the direct link later on.

The other reason has to do with me wanting to become a rapper. When I hear a new song that I like, I get the rush to write a verse based on it. Everytime this happens, I get a conflict over how I should present myself in the way of lyrics. One way I conquer this fear is by crossing different styles into one. I would use mainstream, underground, conscious, gangsta, east coast, west coast, dirty south, Chicano, Latin Hip Hop, sometimes nerdcore, and my trusted gimmick: the love of cartoons and anime. What would happen during my writing sessions is that the styles I embrace end up wanting to take over the whole verse.

For example, in my take on "Brand New," I would start out with an underground ladies-man swagger:

"Gimme a bottle of bourbon, a shot of lime for the burnin'
Hop in my Chevy Suburban, break down the walls that are certain
Escort the finest gals who tendin' to the fine Alize
Maybe we can take a stroll along the Champs-Ulysses"

Switch to conscious:

"Above all that, I gotta deal with bills and collectors
Lepers, I levitate 'em with a swift of a sceptor
Tremendous measures taken up a bunch of notches
The time is a wastin', so is my battery to watches"

Bring in a hindered gimmick:

"You say, 'old school is a bitch'
I say 'ya shit is still Kiddy Grade"

Get political and egotistical (a west coast gimmick, if you will):

"Here's the dilemna, yo, the Mexicans lack
The persona, lyrical wittiness that this ema pack
Like there ain't no room for originals, so go punch the sack
Wanna be down for the brown, then stab the black in the back"

And finish with a west coast attitude:

"You don't like it, get off my jock, and have the vato go FUCK YOU!"

What I'm trying to do is be unique. But the only way I can be unique, and sell, and make a living, is if I act like a rip off. Know what I mean?

That's real talk on this song TJ Santana, especially about the whole Dre thing. We've got Terrace Martin, Amplified, Battlecat, 1500 or Nothin, DJ Khalil, Meech Wells, Jellyroll, Blaqtoven, all of these tight producers who can do tight beats too. We've even got tight talent in Mykestro, Glasses, Bishop, Crooked I, Roccett, & more. But if it ain't got Snoop, Cube, Dre, etc. involved, barely anyone outside here in the West Coast wants to hear it because they assume it's the same ol' "khakis, chucks, rollin' in my 6-4, same ol' same ol'" gangsta type rappin' or that they're wack because they're not cosigned by Snoop or whoever. But yeah you're right man, the West, including like you said, the DJs, needs to step their lyrical & beat game up, it seems like some artists are still stuck in the 91-96 time period & haven't evolved & expanded onto new topics. Just my two cents. 8)

he used double c's in most of his words, thats how you know he's westcoast
