Here We go again Geniuses!!!!!
« on: November 29, 2007, 10:33:35 PM »
Woo Hoo I have a take home final for my math class but I need help with these 2 questions. Any help is appreciated since you guys have been really helpful with everything in the past. Thanks

 SOLVE THE FOLLOWING BY CREATING A GUESS AND CHECK CHART. THEN SET UP AN ALGEBRA EQUATION AND SOLVE THAT

1) A MAN SPENDS $4.OO TO BUY LEMONS. IF THE PRICE OF EACH LEMON WERE 4 CENTS LESS, HE COULD BUY 50 MORE FOR THE SAME AMOUNT OF $. WHAT WAS THE PRICE OF EACH LEMON??

2) AND ART SHOP SELLS 40 IN X 60 IN CANVASES FOR $60.00 EACH. IF THE PRICE OF A CANVAS IS DETERMINED ONLY BY THE COST OF THE MATERIAL WHAT WOULD YOU EXPECT TO BE THE COST OF A 10 IN X 15 IN CANVAS? WHY? MAKE SURE YOU EXPLAIN SOLUTION.

Well any help is appreciated and I know there are some bright people in here  ;D

Thanks y'all

1) A MAN SPENDS $4.OO TO BUY LEMONS. IF THE PRICE OF EACH LEMON WERE 4 CENTS LESS, HE COULD BUY 50 MORE FOR THE SAME AMOUNT OF $. WHAT WAS THE PRICE OF EACH LEMON??

x = price of lemon (cents)
y = number of lemons (quantity)

eq.1
x(y)  =  400               move x over by dividing both sides with x, , so you can graph in y=mx+b form

    y  = 400
            x

eq.2

y + 50  = 400
              x - 4

         y =   400    [ - ]  50       move 50 over by subtraction/addition, so you can graph
               x - 4

          x = 8 cents, y= 50 lemons

40 inches  x  60 inches = 2400 square inches or inch˛

2400 inch˛    = $60
     60 $            $60

40 inch˛ per dollar.

10 inches  x  15 inches = 150 square inches or inch˛
150 inch˛ / 40 inch˛ per $ = $ 3.75

Price is proportional to canvas surface area.
2400/60 = 40
150/3.75 = 40

You're lucky I drank a bunch of code red earlier, I'm suppose to be asleep right now.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Its a big help, I struggle with math at times. I just need to double check and yeah I got the first one right but the second one I got wrong >:(

Here is another question

Greg and George decide to get their exercise by going around the 12 miles loop trial at Big Bear Lake in a somewhat unusual way.  each boy would go in a diiferent dirrection waround the lake on the same trial and they would travel until they meet. If greg runs at a rate of 5mph, and george walks at a rate of 3mph. You may solve this with a guess and check chart.  set up an algebra eqaution that will solve this problem

a). How long aftger starting out did they meet?

b). how far did each of the boys travel??

Any help is appreciated, I hope swaggerious is on code red again because he was a big help

Greg and George decide to get their exercise by going around the 12 miles loop trial at Big Bear Lake in a somewhat unusual way.
Each boy would go in a different direction around the lake on the same trial and they would travel until they meet.

GREG  rate of 5mph.
GEORGE  rate of 3mph.

You may solve this with a guess and check chart.
Set up an algebra equation that will solve this problem.

a). How long after starting out did they meet ?
b). How far did each of the boys travel ?

[rate x time = distance]

Greg
5t = d

George
3t = d

5t + 3t = 12 mi [they're are both sharing 12 miles together]
8t = 12
t = 1.5

Greg 7.5 mi  + George 4.5 mi = 12 mi

Greg isn't doing George a favor.
