I feel about 10X more white trashy, but I gotta admit, I had fun watching it tonight. The interview parts were akward and boring, but it was fun watching it. Used to love that shit when I was a kid.

The gladiators are fuckin lame compared to the old ones. They got beat more in this one episode then they used to in 10 episodes lol.

Yeah, the gladiators are kind of lame.  Hulk was a little off in the first show, but it looks like by the second show he was a little more in his element and his roll was better.  I'm not positive they made the right choice having him host the show.  He's a huge name... so much so that his ego kind of overshadows the action that's going on.  If they had used a lesser known celebrity, he'd be a much better host.  Hulk is such a huge name that some people (um... me) are watching JUST to see Hulk Hogan.  so it kind of detracts from the show, actually.

It may gel a little better after they've been doing it for a while.  I imagine all the shows are taped already but we'll have to see if Hulk kind of toned it down or whatever.

I hate that reality TV style they use for the ref and the stupid voice over it sounds like. The interviews sound so stupid it feels like they're scripted. Hogan is way over the top. Even more so than when he was on Raw or Nitro. I doubt too many people are watching just for him Trauma. Larry Csonka played the role a lot better in the old show but that's not Hogan's fault. It's very clear that everyone is told to turn the volume up and cut promos rather than just be themselves. The one liners the contestants use need to go. And that fire over the water is bit much. But hey, it stayed pretty strong in the second show ratings wise. Let's see how well it keeps up next week.

So you disagree with me?  Big fuckin' surprise there.  Couple things.

Wasn't the voice over guy on the original show?

Also, there was a part, lesse if anybody else can find this, or heard it.  They were getting ready to do the eliminator thing or whatever the fuck it's called, and it was when the girl in blue who was kind of hot, blonde about 35 or so was doing it.  Hulk said something to her, then the next 8 or 9 seconds was a voice over, done by Hulk, over the phone to fill in something they must have not wanted aired.  You could tell that they had recorded his voice over the phone and laid it over that piece of the tape, in the middle of the conversation he was having with the white chick.

We both thought the show needs work. I don't see the disagreement.

I don't remember the echoed ref in the old one. Maybe I'm wrong. It sounds a lot like all the other recent reality shows like Fear Factor in that regard. All I'm saying is that is should be a program under NBC Sports and be produced the same way. That's how the old one was. This isn't predetermined or scripted television. It is legitimate athletic competition but looks more fictitious that some of WWE in parts If the ratings keep up the whole way thn they should change nothing. If they slip a bit then I'd make hanges for round 2. They could really do well in an all NFL themed tournament or an all WWE Superstar themed tournament. Hell if both work they could do an NFL vs WWE Superstar show and really pull in some nice numbers.

Thay was not the point of his post. He said some people (um, him). He was just pointing out a distraction for him when watching the show. I think we both think the show needs some work. That was the point of my post, and I think it was the point of his.

What it comes down to is, like you said, the ratings are through the roof so I wouldnt' do shit if I were them.  Plus i'm saying that if Hogan gets better at doing his job, the show will likely get better.  The first show in particular was just goofy and he was over the top, it was a bit jarring to me, even though I'm a big Hogan fan.  I'll try to explain it better...

I love Hulk Hogan, always have, always will... I'm a HUGE fan.  When I watched American Gladiators, though, the "Hulk" element was that he basically was just kind of cut into the show, he didn't necessarily belong there, and on the other hand his only presense was saying half-ass one liners that even for him weren't very good.  The wrestling element is gone, so it leaves only parts of his persona on the show, and it was just kind of sloppy, it didn't fit well with the show.  So my point was, what's the point of having him there, it's not a great fit... when you see Hulk Hogan you want to see the wrestling atmosphere, him threatening to kick somebody's ass or getting beat up, or running in for the save, lol or something!  It's one of the reasons his movies never do that well, he's a very stereotypical character and without the wrestling atmosphere, you can't keep pigeonholing him into doing his shtick because it won't work without the wrestling.

Now on the second show, he kind of gelled a little better with his host duties, and I think he's talented enough and charismatic enough that maybe he can pull it off, but my original thought was that he wasn't a good fit for the show, because his wrestling persona and ego is too large for the limited position they're putting him in.  It would make more sense for him to do a show where he was coaching people, or giving advice, or whatever instead of just standing there and doing stupid one liners.  NOBODY is interested in seeing Hulk Hogan interview somebody.... but at the same time, how fucking cool would it be to see Hogan interview Vince McMahon in a run up to a match at the Royal Rumble or something?  The wrestling element would be there so it would be interesting.  For this to be a 'reality' show and then have Hogan be a big cartoon character just doesn't make much sense to me.

See I don't disagree with anything there. I would put more blame on NBC than on Hulkster though. He can play it straight if he wants. A lot of his Hogan Knows Best scenes were predetermined scenarios and he did great there. If I wasn't already big into wrestling and had already known that Harry Smith was casted for the show as Brooke's date I wouldn't have thought it was staged. I'm sure the average vh1 viewers thought Hogan just ran into the kid at the gym. Hogan is way better at "running into" people and acting like it's rea than his family is. Brooke isn't bad though. But Nick isn't very good at all.

I think Hogan would work a lot better playing the same role Csonka played in the old show. He could be a color guy next to the play by play man. He wouldn't have to interview people. Just intro the show and add to the play by play with his "expertise". Stuff like "see what you want to do with the hand bike is an even flow. Don't just push up then let it drop and push up harder. It throws the momentum and you lose speed rather than gain it". Now I don't if that's really the best way to ride the hand bike in the eliminator and I best Hogan doesn't either, but I'm positive 99% percent of the audience don't have a clue and will take the Hulkster's word for it. Ali's daughter could handle the interviews ad add her two cents in conversatons with the anounce team. But only if the ratings drop. It went from 6.7 to 6.2. If it stays above 5 next week don't bother messing with the formula. If it drops to under 4.0 then it's change up time.

Yea, I agree with that.  That was my whole point originally about how Hulk is too big of a name for the position.  Color Commentary would be much better, you can't tell Hulk Hogan 'do the Hulk thing!" and have him cut promos over and over again when he's out of the realm of wrestling.  It looks silly.

I agree about the Hogan Knows Best thing, as well.  He was hilarious in some of that stuff, and yes it was pretty much all half-ass scripted.  I mean, one show they go to the park and dress up so nobody recognizes them, Hogan's saying funny shit to people and wrecking wheelchairs, etc.  That was all set up.  Another show Hogan goes to a hair replacment specialist, gets his feelings hurt, etc. that was all set up as well.  He's a decent 'actor' if you can call it that at what he does; the man has a TON of charisma and is a very likeable guy... but the way they're using him in American Gladiators is a total waste.

On the second show, though, you could see him kind of getting a little more relaxed and knowing what was going on more.  He told one girl "I wrestled for 30 years, and you got beat up more in that one match of Joust then I did in my entire career!"  That was probably something he just ad libbed, and it worked.

Another thing I'd like to reiterate, the gladiators kind of suck right now.  I think after everybody gets used to the equipment though the show will get better.
