Pics... Hajj 2003... I finally got the negatives on a digital cd

When I had my Africa pics developed I realized I could also get my old Hajj negatives on digital cd.  So here's a few of my pics from 2003 Hajj season.  It was a long time ago, this was when I was 20 and had only recently (at age 18) converted to Islam late in the year 2000, I'm 25 now.  Basically, the Hajj is one of the 5 pillars of Islam; along with worshiping One God alone, praying 5 times a day, fasting the month of Ramadaan, and giving at least 2% of our salary to charity.  On Hajj we leave all worldly things behind and go out in the path of Allah.  A couple of the obligatory actions are spending a day in the desert of Arafat asking forgiveness from Allah, with all people weather kings or peasants dressed in the same two white sheets, and circling the Kabaah in Mekkah which is one of the oldest houses of worship.. the Kabbah itself was once a site where as many as 365 idols were worshiped before Muhammad, but it was cleansed of all the idols, and worship was re-established for the Creator alone.



Myself, wearing a white kufi, outside of the Prophet's first mosque in Medina.  Obviously it has been renovated a great deal since the 7th Century.  The Prophet is just a man like any one of us, he lived and died, and his grave is located inside the mosque. 



That's the same place as described above, only this picture was taken at night.  It's very beautiful at night with all the lights, however, obviously my camera was a cheap disposable one I bought at the last minute.



That's myself and Ali, another young guy that was with me on Hajj.  Here we are seen overlooking Mekkah.  I'm the one with the white kufi and he's the one with the white t-shirt.  This was actually taken on a mountain right outside our hotel.  Our hotel was near the city of Mena, about a mile inside Mekkah.  Muslims who have been to Hajj know the significance of Mena, well, we were walking distance away from Mena and the Jammarat.



Here is myself and some other pilgrims, 2 Iraqi, 2 Afgan.  This picture was taken just before entering the part of Mekkah where the pilgrim is supposed to clean himself both inside and out, and remain in a state of purity for the duration of his stay inside as he visits and circambulates the Kabaah.  Everyone is wearing just two white towels as seen here, whether peasant or King, because when we are judged by Allah in the end we can not take any wealth with us, so this is symbolizing us coming with nothing, to stand in front of Allah with only our deeds.

Mekkah and Medina are not supposed some fancy, upscale vacation spot.  These two cities are historical sites, for religious purposes.  Trading, buying and selling has always flourished in Mekkah but it is done in a very modest fashion.  The city is kept that way, it is timeless. 

If your interested in finding something more like New York city, you can go a few hundred miles away to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and you will find great wealth and extravagance.   

The purpose of the Hajj to Mekkah is not to live in luxury, it is actually the opposite, it is to leave everything we love behind to make the great journey for the sake of Allah.  Because when we die we will leave everything behind and face our Creator.
