I mean, anyone who has a dog (and is relatively nice to it and shows it attention) knows that dogs show affection back

of course dogs can see when a person treats it right, that's why it trusts you

It really ain't as simple as some of you are trying to make it. Of course animals can't think in the same intellectual way that humans can, but some more intelligent animals have a similar system of emotions built into them as we do. Homo sapiens is just the animal with the most highly developed brain in the areas responsible for human culture, but other than that, it's not like we're anything special in a biological sense.

This actually is an interesting question. Some theories assume animal behaviour is simply the reaction to a stimulus, whereby only humanbeings have the capability to interpret a stimulus.
Other theories claim some animals have the capability to interpret a stimulus too.
I really wouldn't know the answer. Is animal behaviour just the result of conditioning and reinforcement, whereby emotions are just human interpretations of animal behaviour? Does a dog really show "affection (which is a concept made up my humanbeings)" when a human is feeding it, or is his behaviour simply reinforcing the human to give it more food?

Has anyone heard of the story where a guy was being attacked by a Grizzly bear, only to be saved by his dog?... the dog ended up dying, but if that's not love and care, then I dunno what is. Point is, animals can feel emotions just like humans can. Just because they are not as complex as us doesn't mean they don't understand love. If you enforce positive energy on a cat, it will purr. If the cat loves you, it will come back to you and purr every time it feels the love. When I sleep at my girls house, the cat wakes me up by laying on my chest and purring. Then when I start petting him, he rubs his head into my face. Anyone who thinks animals are all about food is lost.

The cat, for example, knows that purring will be rewarded with petting, which gonna make pur it even more. Where's the love in that cyclus? And the dog trying to save it's owner is simple group behaviour. That's how wolves support eachother in the wild too. There's no love involved in that, it's just altruďstic behaviour.

When a cat purrs that means it feels content...they don't choose to purr, it just comes out. Explain why a cat will fall asleep on a humans chest purring? If the human leaves the room, the cat stops purring. LOL. Love is an energy. You can feel an animals energy when it's loving. Do you own any pets, by any chance?

I have a dog. I feel like I'm important for it and the dog gives me "love" back. Although that "love" is my interpretation of the dog's bahaviour. It's impossible to tell if there are actually any feeling involved from the dogs behalf.
