Pink Floyd Appreciation Thread
« on: May 08, 2008, 02:35:01 PM »
A salute to one of the greatest bands of all time.  Their landmark concept album "Dark Side Of The Moon" which was released in 1973, spent 741 consecutive weeks on the Billboard 200 chart and a total of 1500+ weeks on the same chart since its release.  It is Billboard 200's longest consecutive charting album to date with the next longest charting 490 consecutive weeks.

Commercial success aside, Pink Floyd's music is many things to many people.  To sum up their music in a short sentence is perplexing for me personally, so I'll just rip straight from wikipedia:

Pink Floyd are an English progressive rock band that initially earned recognition for their psychedelic or space rock music, and, as they evolved, for their progressive rock music. They are known for philosophical lyrics, sonic experimentation, innovative cover art, and elaborate live shows.

If I were to suggest to new listeners which Pink Floyd album to start with, I'd say either "Dark Side Of The Moon" or "The Wall".  Overall though, you can't go wrong with any of the following releases, which are my personal faves:

Meddle (1971)
Dark Side Of The Moon (1973)
Wish You Were Here (1975)
Animals (1977)
The Wall (1979)

Here are lyrics to one of many classic songs of theirs called "Wish You Were Here" which is an ode to the original Pink Floyd founder, Syd Barrett.

So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell,
blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?
How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have you found? The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

Gotta give it up to a legendary band - I don't like most of their songs, but I pay respect when respect is due.

Wish You Were Here is a classic, and Comfortably Numb is one of my favorite songs. Shine On You Crazy Diamond is good too.

That "We Dont Need No Education" song is off the Richter scale IMO.

Wow, sounds like a great time.  I'm a fan of Prince & Portishead too.

Indeed it is.

'Piper At The Gates Of Dawn' is a damn good album too.

Yeah, that's a classic "vintage" Floyd album with the original founder Syd Barrett before he was kicked out of the band.  Not to mention it's their debut album.

I love this video too.  Echoes is an epic track and another of my favorite Floyd tracks of all time.

Personally, there isn't a Floyd album that I don't like.  I just finished listening to Atom Heart Mother yesterday and it is one of those underappreciated Floyd albums in their discography.  Matter of factly, the 1st song off that album was used in the 1st scene of Stanley Kubrick's cult classic flick A Clockwork Orange.

^ I like Atom Heart Mother, but you really have to be in the mood for that, the two main tracks are almost pure avantgardism.

Personally, I think The Wall is dramatically overrated, IMO that's when they really began to fall off...first Waters going megalomaniac and then Wanters leaving the band. Final Cut really wasn't all that and the Gilmour-era albums, I dunno...Divison Bell is nothing special and I still haven't listened to the entire Momentary Lapse of Reason yet. But Pink Floyd 1967-1977 are unfuckwithable

By the way, if you haven't, check out Syd Barrett's solo albums

Dark Side Of The Moon is one of the best albums of all time period. Personally I like "The Wall" better though, but great thread on one of the best bands ever.
