google search "Hand Brake" to rip movies to MP4 for all kinds of devices... but not sure if it will convert files to mp4 or just rip from a dvd... but works great from what im saying...

there is an app called mpeg stream clip on the mac that does convert mostly all files but i dont know if they have a pc version
