Why I Think "The Fix" = 5 Mics
« on: September 02, 2002, 02:36:11 AM »
I've had some time to contemplate on what 'Face's "The Fix" LP is worth and this is why I think it's worthy of the 5 mics the Source awarded it with:

1. First and foremost the lyrics and beats fit perfectly together resulting in an album full of perfect songs.

2. The album has it's share of potential club bangers (for example, "Safe", "Guess Who's Back", "My Block", "Sellout" & "I Ain't The One") and more serious, thought provoking joints (for example, "What Can I Do?", "In Between Us", "Someday" & "Heaven").

3. He speaks on almost everything, from social/political/
religious commentry (for example, "My Block", "What Can I Do", "Someday" & "Heaven") to everyday life (for example,
"Safe", "In Cold Blood", "My Block" & "Keep Me Down").

4. It's not flooded with guest appearences that take away his shine, he holds his own throughout.

5. It's not too long & it's not too short, it's just, well, perfect.

In conclusion I find "The Fix" to represent what a real hip-hop album should. It's even with it's content, there's not too many
bouncy tracks and there's not too many serious tracks, there's not one off beat and that goes for the rhymes too. This is an important album in this new era of hip-hop I feel, and just about any hip-hop fan should be able to appreciate it, i'd almost consider it a blueprint for the new sound of
hip-hop because there's so many artists that are straying from
hip-hop's root these days, and with 'Face he hasn't changed anything about his original style, he's simply just updated it.
Also, this album is a perfect example of how hip-hop and RnB/Soul can and does work when done right.

I think that if you take one of the 'O's' out of 'Good' it's 'God', if you add a 'D' to 'Evil' it's the 'Devil'. I think some cool motherfucker sat down a long time ago and said 'let's figure out a way to control motherfuckers'.

Excellent breakdown of the album. I still believe Dr. Dre - 2001 is the last genuine classic that dropped but by The Source's criteria which judges classics by the growth, originality, etc. of the artists as well as most of the songs being ill as fuck then I can see why they gave The Fix 5 Mics. By that criteria Stillmatic definitely deserves the 5 it got too. The majority usually never agree with the ratings anyways. It happened with Illmatic, Life After Death and Aquemini.

Well said man. More artists should follow that Illmatic formula when it comes to albums. Not more than 9 or 10 songs that are all great.

=<[Euthanasia]>=, you took the words out of my mouth mate. It's the best album I've heard in a long time - definately in the last couple of years. It's so universal - it doesn't sound like a west coast album or a southern album or an east coast album - it just sounds like quality hip-hop that hopefully will sound as fresh ten years down the line as it does in 2002.

Congrats Face. You'll take some beating on this one.

i just dont think this deserves any higher than 3 mics...he sounds way too lazy over east coast styled beats...to me its kinda ridin jay-z fame...hes had much better albums than this...Diary and Last Of A Dying Breed were much better...the collaborations are wack...i dont like the faith features nor the kelly price...and the nas and rocafella features are atrocious...they dont mesh with face well at all...the dub c track was ok...i respect face to the utmost but i just think this album was wack....

Sorry, but I cant give this album 5 mics, even as a huge fan of Face. It is, however, a solid 4 mic album, which isnt bad by any means. Plenty of blazin songs, but some of the production lacks, and even though its a consistant album, it doesnt have anything mind blowing on it. I mean, do you HONESTLY think any of the songs on here can compare to songs like "I Seen A Man Die", "Hand of the Dead Body", "Im Dead", "Now I Feel Ya", "Mary Jane", "Smile", etc etc?? I think not......im not disappointed though. Face has only made one true classic album in my opinion: The Diary. However, all of his other albums are no lower than 4 mics, making him one of the most consistant MC's ever.

But 5 mics is definatly pushin it. I dont know, maybe I just have very high standards.

I think this is definately worthy of 5 mics when it comes to The Sources standards, no doubt about it. It's on the level of "Stillmatic" imo, and it's better than "The Blueprint". I don't consider it a classic just yet, I mean it's only been out for a few weeks, there's still the longevity test yet. But I think the way I explained why I think it deserves the 5 mics The Source gave it is justified, I knew some people would doubt it's worthyness after The Source rated it because not many people agree with their ratings. I havn't read their review of it but if I was to rate it as a 5 mic album those are the exact reasons I would give (above), thats what i'm trying to say.

I don't think this album rates as high as "The Diary", that album was worth nothing less than 5 mics, this album deserves the 5 mics but nothing more.

In all honesty...I just feel the Eastcoast belives they have shun Face his whole career and belive they owe him.
During his "Akshun" day's the Geto boy's had to struggle to get any prop's outside of the "West". Listen to the music....it was clearly on a different style and level way back then, topic's that had never been tackled by anybody had ever attempted. And I disagree with the census saying "The Diary" was his tightest joint. I really felt "Mr Scarface is back" way more no guest's no comercial track's, Just Face raw as ever.

And the homie above was truley right when he said that Face has never dropped anything less than a 4. (with the exception of the poor "My homies").

In all honesty Face getting the 5 mic's....dosn't really mean shitt to those who have always known he was a 5 mic artist, but congrat's to Mr. Brad Jordan., + being on the home of the 5 mic dosn't hurt u any....(Def Jam  ;) )

Peace

Well I just got The Fix today (only my 3rd 2002 album with Eminem and I.N.I.  :o)

Anyways I just gave it my first listen from 1-13 non-stop.
So far so good.  I'm feeling some tracks hard already.  Too early to give an "official" opinion.

One thing that other artists better learn is to follow this blueprint by have 10-14 tracks, minimal guestspots, and NO skits in the middle of the ablum to make you fast forward.  Jigga and Nas did it too and made thier best albums since their debuts.

Hopefully Dre, Redman, Eminem and others can kill the useless skits that get one listen then become fast-forward  material.

"The Fix" is truly a very good album...

What makes it a good album is its length and that there are no skits! - And of course the fact that there's no bad trax on it, actually most of the trax are good imo.

If I had to rate it I would give it 4.75...

Gotta say it, gotta say it, gotta say it...

Can't bottle it up any more...

I prefer The Fix to The Diary.

Phew... there, it's out there - I'm prepared for the hail of bullets, stones and fruit 'n' veg.

In my humble opinion Fix doesn't have one throw away track on it - nothing there that doesn't speak volumes about life and the day-today struggles we all go through.

I LOVE The Diary, don't get me wrong. Got it on cassette the day it came out in the UK and bumped it for months and months. Know all the words to Man Die and MInd Playin Tricks 94. But it has a couple of weak tracks, like G's and... whatever the closing track was called (apologies, the tape is at my parents' house many miles away).

I've got all face's solo albums apart from My Homies and Dying Breed. He's done some wack shit in his time (Untouchable is a fucking horrendous album - straight garbage). But I genuinely think Fix is the hottest CD he's made.

Don't hate me too bad - Diary comes second.  ;D
