Rap is a part of hip - hop

Exactly. Rap is just that - rapping, talking rhythmically in rhymes. Hip-hop, if you want to use it in the broadest sense, also includes various other mediums that developed in the years around rap - ie. breakdancing, graffiti and scratching.

I never cared much for hip hop..Although I have found Salt And Peppers "push it" to be quite the musical thrill ride at one of my dormitory's many "guy's night in" get togethers, after maybe sneaking some schnapps hmmhmm

Gangsta rap is hip-hop as far as I'm concerned. At the same time, yes, the West Coast has a lot more to offer than just gangsta rap. One of the "problems" is that the West Coast became so successful off gangsta rap in the early to mid-90s that some people without a more in-depth knowledge of Cali music simply think West Coast = Dre, Snoop, Cube and Pac, artists that, for better or worse, are normally termed "gangsta rap". But my favourite West Coast release last year was Evidence's "Weatherman LP", a hip-hop record record in the truest sense - even the video to 'Mr Slow Flow' was based around Ev doing graffiti.
