Report: Police May Have Grazed Pregnant Woman With Shot

A relative of the woman says she was nicked either by a bullet or shrapnel as East Los Angeles deputies fired on an allegedly armed man, who was later arrested. Officials call the wound a 'scratch.'

Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies who fired multiple shots at a man they were chasing in East Los Angeles late Friday afternoon may have grazed a pregnant bystander, authorities and a relative of the woman said Saturday.

The incident began about 5 p.m. when deputies responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon at Fetterly Avenue and 6th Street, said sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore.

When deputies arrived, a man pulled out of a nearby driveway and crashed head-on into the deputies' patrol car, he said.

The deputies later told investigators that they fired twice at the man when they saw him reach for a weapon on his dashboard, Whitmore said.

Deputies said the man then ran from his car. Two additional deputies who had been called to the scene also shot at him, authorities said.

Whitmore said deputies reported that the man then jumped over a fence and they fired two more times in his direction. Whitmore did not say whether the man fired back.

Neither the man nor any deputies were injured.

After the shooting, deputies learned that a female bystander had been hurt, Whitmore said. Sheriff's officials initially reported that the bystander was grazed by shrapnel but Whitmore described the wound as a "scratch."

"We don't know how it occurred," he said, "but we are not ruling out that it is unrelated to the shooting."

A relative of the woman, however, said she was grazed on her left thigh by either a bullet or shrapnel after being caught in the middle of the shooting.

Socorro Romo, 59, said the injured woman is her cousin's wife. Romo said her cousin and his wife were about to cross Fetterly Avenue when gunfire erupted. Romo said her cousin dragged his pregnant wife to the back of a parked car to protect her from gunfire.

She said the woman is eight months pregnant. She was taken to White Memorial Hospital, where she was treated and released. Romo's cousin and wife did not answer their door Saturday.

"Thank God there were no children outside," Romo said. "The deputies should have assessed the situation a little better."

On Saturday morning, two candles were lighted on the sidewalk near where the shooting began.

Whitmore said the man who allegedly initiated the confrontation with deputies was arrested at the scene Friday on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. A gun was recovered at the scene, authorities said. The man's name was not released.
