Defari Discography Review (D~Nice Edition)
« on: June 14, 2008, 08:05:50 AM »
Decided to give Defari's discography a review. I have been a fan of his since I heard his verse on Handle Your Business on Xzibit's 40 Dayz N 40 Nightz. He has a nice little catalog of music so here is my 2 cents on it.

1. Intro (DJ Revolution)
  2. Focused Daily (Feat. Evidence Of Dilated Peoples)
  3. Never Lose Touch
  4. Keep It On The Rise
  5. Lowlands Anthem, PT. 1
  6. Bionic
  7. Likwit Connection (Feat. Phil Tha Agony & Tha Alkaholiks)
  8. Yes Indeed
  9. Killing Spree
  10. These Dreams
  11. Juggle Me
  12. Thunder & Lightining
  13. 405 Friday's
  14. Checkstand 3
  15. No Clue (Feat. Barbershop Chocolate Tye)
  16. Gems
  17. People's Choice

Focused Daily: For debut west coast albums, this one ranks high for me. Nice blend of dope beats and rhymes. D has a very unique voice, which can be very commanding when he wants, or he can just kick str8 knowledge on the mic and get lyrical. Favs on this are Lowlands Anthem PT 1, Liwkit Connection, No Clue. I can bump this from start to finish and not skip a track.

1. Intro
  2. Ralo R.I.P. Jam
  3. Say It Twice
  4. Interlude #1
  5. Aged Whiskey Aged Remy - (featuring Chuck Hustle)
  6. Develop Tools
  7. Interlude #2
  8. Unforgettable, The - (featuring Veronica Mendez)
  9. Real Not Fake - (featuring Chocolate Ty)
  10. Interlude #3
  11. Clear the Lane - (featuring Phil Da Agony/Defari)
  12. Big Up - ('95 Classic Exclusive)
  13. Big Up - (TRUE instrumental)

Billy The Kid: Saloon Music- Man Defari follows his debut with a certified banger of a EP. This is this alter ego so to speak Billy The Kid, in what was supposed to be a series of mcs doing albums like this (Phil Da Agony, etc) but this was the only one that actually came out. Either way it is INSANE. E-Swift and Evidence really came up with some dope beats on this and Defari lyrically wrecks all of them. The Beat for Say It Twice is crazy. Sounds like some Dre shit. If it was a little bit longer it would probably surpass his 1st one for me, but dope either way. I think it is out of print, but if you can get it, do it. Highly recommended.

1   Joyride
2   Bionic II
3   Smack Ya Face
4   I Can't Wait
5   Keep It On The Rise II
6   Behold My Life

LA Collection: Defari dropped another EP before Odds & Evens and this one was nice as well but the beats were not up to par. Bionic II made it worth it for me. Not horrible, but for the foundation he built with the previous 2, there is a slight drop off.

  1. Pick a Number
  2. Inner City - (featuring E-Swift)
  3. Cold Pieces
  4. Spell My Name
  5. Hooks
  6. Pour More Likwit - (featuring J-Ro)
  7. Slumpy
  8. Odds and Evens
  9. Take the Weight of My Hand
  10. Behold My Life - (remix, featuring Dilated Peoples)
  11. Diamonds in the Rough
  12. Extra Thump - (featuring Tash)
  13. For the Love
  14. Los Angelinos - (featuring Evidence)
  15. Chocolate Ty - (interlude)
  16. Stay Bubblin' - (featuring Phil Da Agony)

Odds & Evens: On this one from 2003, the beats are smoother. Fred Wreck contributed 2 or 3 beats to this but lyrically as always Defair is still on point. Inner City, Behold My Life, and Slumpy are some of my favs. Nice album, not as good as the 1st 2 but still a good album.

  1. Intro
  2. Lj's Anthem
  3. One Day Away
  4. Hop, The
  5. Salute
  6. Change
  7. Strength in Numbers
  8. Good Green, The
  9. Keep Doin' It
  10. One Time
  11. D.G. Interlude
  12. 6 in the Morning
  13. Ghetto
  14. S.C.A.N.S.
  15. Dark Ends
  16. Dreamgirl
  17. Brother Brother
  18. Interview, The

Likwit Junkies: This is a collabo album with DJ Babu of Dilated People doing the beats. Kind of disappointing for what you are getting. I mean its Babu and Defari. A little uneven and boring the first 4 or 5 songs but it ends great after that. Defari gets real political on here. Cool album, but it could have been more.

  1. Hardworker
  2. Either Dead or in Jail - (with Tuffy/Boo Kapone)
  3. Congratulations
  4. Peace and Gangsta
  5. Make My Own - (with Evidence)
  6. West West - (with Noelle)
  7. We've Been Doin' This - (with Threat/J-Ro)
  8. Burn Big
  9. Barwork
  10. Deepest Regards - (with B Real/J-Ro)
  11. People Trip
  12. Clowns - (with Dilated Peoples)
  13. Bizness, The
  14. Don't Be Mad at Me
  15. Vultures

Street Music: This is probably his weakest album. Beats were just not up to par with his previous releases and lyrically at times he sounded bored. Definitely some dope cuts though. Clowns, Deepest Regards, Hardworker. Again he really does not have a horrible album in his catalog, just had some average ones and this is one of them.

Overall,

Excluding LA Collection, the way I laid out the albums is pretty much how I would rank them. Definitely recommend checking out his albums. One of the more underrated mcs in the Likwit Crew.

I'm gonna have re-listen to some of these these albums in the future.

BTW, didn't Defari used to teach history or something to high schoolers?

Yup. He graduated from Cal Berkeley with a degree in something, I don't remember.

agree with everything d nice said, tho i woulda been much harder on the street music album.....im sorry, but both lyrically on sonically, that album was straight up wack......especially lyrically.....he isnt even trying on most of those songs, and sum of the hooks are god awfull......but all the other reviews were on point, i liked the likwit junkies album a little more than u, but even then defari started to fall off, the production is really what carries it

Props for checking it out. Yeah Street Music I liked a good portion of it but it is easily his weakest.
