Slick rick is fucked up

He was arrested by the INS (Immigration and Naturalization Service) on June 1 after getting off a cruise ship and the legendary emcee Slick Rick is still in custody in Bradenton, Florida for deportation back to England. In a statement released this week by Rick's lawyers, a deportation hearing was held last Friday where the rapper was denied bail during his appeal after the judge cited him as a flight risk.

Within the past couple of years, especially after 9/11, INS laws have become a bit more complicated. Slick Rick came to the U.S at the age of 11 on a permanent resident visa and never became a U.S citizen. In 1991, Rick was convicted of attempted murder after shooting his cousin (who was killed a couple of years later) and served four years in prison. After he was released in 1995, he won an appeal to be able to stay in the U.S. but the INS filed an appeal in 1997 where he was ordered to return to London. At this time, Rick filed appeal after appeal with hopes of staying in the U.S. but never got a notice to report for his deportation. To make it even worse, in 1996, Congress passed a law allowing the INS to deport anyone who committed a serious crime even after their sentences.

In May, Slick Rick joined Tom Joyner on his Fantastic Voyage 2002, a Caribbean cruise that featured performances from Erykah Badu, Angie Stone and Earth Wind & Fire. When the boat ported back into Miami after the week long cruise, Slick Rick showed his credentials to the INS. They brought his info up and noticed that the rapper had been ordered for deportation back in 1997 and had a warrant for his arrest. The INS then arrested him on charges of deporting himself (leaving the U.S. on the cruise) and then re-entering the U.S illegally.

Slick Rick and his lawyer plan to appeal the charges, but its possible that it may take three to six months before it goes in front of a judge. Since Rick was denied bond, he would be locked up for that entire time period.

Rick's wife and manager, Mandy Aragones, issued a statement asking for the judge to release the rapper on bond. "All his loved ones are here in America. He should be allowed to return to his family in New York while sorting out this matter with INS."
