I'm sorry but that doesn't make sense. 

Liberals were generally considered to be against the Vietnam war, not joining the war and requesting to be a foot soldier.

So what were his other logical options?  Dude, once you're in the battlefield, ideals go flying out the window man.  And you would also do the best you can to protect your fellow soldiers.
