'Sup !

You could try to find  Cubase 5 VST.
It has a drumbox inside (called LM4) in which you could used some samples you got from existing beats (snare, bass drum, Hihat, etc...) in a wave format.
It's really dope .
Try to get an evaluation version of cubase 5 and to find the LM4 plug-in (caus' i don't think it's inside the evaluation version)
Then you'll see if it's good for you (caus' cubase is really expensive)
And also get on Acid to mix your beat with some samples loop if you're not into midi creation (cubase is used for midi thing)
Peace !

Alternative is to use only Acid (or fruity loops but i don't know it) to mixed severals samples together in 1 multitrack.

Fruity Loops is good, u can get a free demo at www.fruityloops.com

I decided to buy some midi hardware though (I have an MC-303 Groovebox now).

Although I still need to find a decent sequencer to use under Windows 2000 with it.

I still need a sampler (i want a cheap mpc-600ii or a mpc2000xl or an mpc3000)

I could probably make do on the PC.. but I love fiddling with hardware.

i USED TO USE REBIRTH, but that shits str8 wack, it has only 2 drum sets and 2 basslines...i used to use HAMMERHEAD, but dats only drums plus its only MONO SOUND, ... fruity loops iz dope, it has like 700 sample sounds or sum shit, PLUS u can easily get ur own sounds as instruments, all dat SHIET!

Acid 3s out now.

at the moment i'm doing the following...

chopping and lacing beats in fruity -> export beat to wav
doing synhty notes n stuff in cakewalk (or cubase but cubase doesnt like win2k) -> export to midi
import midi to the fruity ts-404 synth -> export to wav

sounds complicated.. buts its SOOOO simple its unreal

so i have my beat and each component layer of sound as high qual wav

use acid pro3 to stick it all together - acid pro is dope for that shit it can do timestretching n stuff

it really depends what u wanna do.. i've just discovered something that works for me simply with what i wanna do.

i dunno what u know.. and what u dont..

i'd started looking into beats and get something like sound forge and chop em up into little segments

learn to use fruity loops to stick em together in new ways

lol i got full version of fruity loops 3... I don't suggest it as the best beat maker out there.. software wize.. CUBASE is more in the line for MIDI production NOT intended to use by itself. You won't find much shit on software that will be good enough to make beats, I would just say go save your money, and if your serious in this music business BUY REAL HARDWARE, and intergrate it with your computer.. If your not willing to spend thousands on equipment, and won't get a job and save up for it, you might as well stop trying to set your foot in this business.

Use your PC ONLY for recording, not beat making. I use mine to master, record AFTER it runs through other shit (*hardware*) and.. Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 is better then Cubase.. and Pro Tools is even better..

What that other foo sayin' aint right, why the hell would you want to export to MIDI and then import to Fruityloops if your running on a shitty sound card..

FIRST off, MIDI won't sound good... unless you got one of those 500 dollar sound cards, in which, still won't sound good.. Wha yall should just do iz just get a damn MPC2000xl for the beginners.. Howeva, tha foo sayi'n basically iz u do yo shit in cakewalk, and then to make it to wave.. you save it as midi, then import it into fruity loops, where you can save it as a wave file.. ain't no reason to if you wanna str8 use fruity loops, might as well use the piano rolls in FL3..

What's even simplier is go get a mixer, and plug everything into it, then plug the mixer into your computer.. how? without spending shit's full of money? get a damn converter into a 1/8th jack so you can go from your speakers on your computer 2 the mixer..
and your tape in's should just have another one that will change into a 1/8th jack.. THAT WAY you can plug in a CD player with uh say beats u mighta burned.. and plug in some head phones into the head phones, and mic into the mixer, and the other recording mic str8 into PC..
Wha happens? talk on the mic at the computer, and the head phones of the recording person can stand like in a room, hear the music, and hear himself, without fucking up your vocal accapellas because the computer will only record the vocals he bustin'.. and when u talk into your mic, it won't come up.. uh daz 4 people who dun like having to knock on tha recording room to tell them something, so you can sit in your "control room" and talk directly to them..

You ca

chopping and lacing beats in fruity -> export beat to wav
doing synhty notes n stuff in cakewalk (or cubase but cubase doesnt like win2k) -> export to midi
import midi to the fruity ts-404 synth -> export to wav

sounds complicated.. buts its SOOOO simple its unreal

so i have my beat and each component layer of sound as high qual wav
