Before the Civil Rights movement, the Democrats had the religious Christian vote.  The Christian racists were so pissed off at LBJ(one of their "own") for signing the Civil Rights Act that they actually left the party.  The Republican Party saw this as a big opportunity to find God and swept the South.

I still think she's been a good choice, just didn't work out well. McCain wouldn't be better off with another white rep with grey hair as VP, that's for sure.
