NoT's All-Time Favourite Baseball Players
« on: March 04, 2002, 11:25:00 AM »
C - Pat Borders (on TOR - 1989-1995)
Pat Borders' shining moment came in 1992 when he was named the World Series MVP for his gritty play at the plate and clutch hitting throughout the series. I loved watching him play because of his work ethic and never-say-die attitude.

1B - Carlos Delgado (on TOR - 1994, 1996-present)
There's no doubt that Carlos Delgado is presently one of the game's greatest power hitters. The secret behind his power is not so much his great strength (which many other players posses too... but not usually on the same level) but his fantastic eye. Last season Delgado finished second in the AL in walks behind only Jason Giambi. True, this is partially due to the Blue Jays' inability to find a number five hitter capable of protecting him in the order, but he also drew a lot of walks in situations that didn't call for it and makes very few bad swings at pitches.

2B - Roberto Alomar (on SD - 1988-1990, TOR - 1991-1995, BAL - 1996-1999, CLE - 2000-2001, NYM - present)
When he retires, Roberto Alomar may well be recognised as the greatest player ever to play his position. He has won ten consecutive gold gloves, several batting titles, and in all but one season out of the last ten he has been the best player at his position. It is said that when he was a child, young Roberto would cry all along the three mile walk home from the ballpark whenever his team lost. Nowadays, grown-up Robbie usually leads his team to victory. His best season was in 1992 when he won the ALCS MVP award by hitting a game-winning homer in the eighth inning of game six to send Toronto to their first-ever World Series.

3B - Brooks Robinson (on BAL - late 1960s-early 1970s)
In 1970 Brooks Robinson almost single-handedly defeated the "Big Red Machine" with his bat (6RBIs in the series) and his glove (he saved about as many runs with spectacular plays at the "hot corner"). Anyone who has ever seen the spectacular play he made on what looked to be extra bases by Pete Rose knows what I'm talking about. He was playing deep and the ball hit the dirt just past third base and bounced towards foul territory. Robinson made a wild diving stab of the ball about ten feet  outside of third and gunned the speedy Rose out at first from his knees.

SS - Cal Ripken Jr. (on BAL - 1981-2001)
There are a few constants in Major League baseball: obnoxious Yankees fans, Montreal's rebuilding process, and great play from Cal Ripken Jr. Over the 21 seasons in his career Cal had almost 450HR and and played excellent defense (first as a SS and then as a 3B).

LF - Pete Rose (on CIN - 1960s and 1970s, MON - 1980s)
In 1962 Major League Baseball welcomed its meanest, most ornery player since Ty Cobb. Once, in an All Star game, Rose "cleated" the catcher at home on a close play and ended the young star's career... IN AN ALL STAR GAME! After the game, when the press asked him why he would make such an aggresive, potentially harmful play in the midseason classic he replied, "I never could've looked my father straight in the eye again if I hadn't cleated that fucker." As a child, Rose's father forced him to swing a bat (loaded down with weights) one-hundred times both lefthanded and righthanded. This training created one of the games greatest hitters and the all-time leader in career hits.

CF - Devon White (ANA - 1980s, TOR - 1991-1995... various other teams)
There is no doubt that White's best years came as a member of the two-time world champion Blue Jays of the early 1990s. He was a key part of the lethal WAMCO combination (Devon White-Roberto Alomar-Paul Molitor-Joe Carter-John Olerud in 1993-1994) and was the smoothest-fielding center-fielder baseball had seen since Willie Mays.

RF - Shawn Green (on TOR - 1995-1999, LA - 2000-present)
There's no doubt about it, Shawn has all five tools (hit for power, hit for average, run the bases, field, throw) and he employs them beautifully. He's a great player to watch and I wish him (and the rest of the Dodgers) luck.

SP - Roger Clemens (on BOS - 1985-1997, TOR - 1998-1999, NYY 2000-present)
Clemens always has been and always will be a power pitcher. I model my game after him and I hope to one day follow in his footsteps as the greatest Jays pitcher of all time (even though he only spent two seasons with us).

RP - Duane Ward (on TOR 1989-1993)
He was the setup man from 1989-1992 behind "automatic" closer Tom "The Terminator" Henke and then became the Jays' most dominant fireman ever in 1993 before experiencing a career-ending injury during Spring Training in 1994.

Hell Yeah!  Not, your my new best friend.

My fav players of all time:

Cal Ripken Jr.
Redefined the position of SS when he took the field @ 6-4 225 lbs.  There is a lot to say, but I love this dude all around

Alex Rodrigues
He's the closest thing to Cal nowadays.  Great power hitting SS.

Yo Not, did you get any baseball games?  I bought High Heat Baseball 2003 for PS2, it's awesome, I'm bout to start my season.

PEace!

HHBB03 is ill.  I love the replays, mound visits and ejections.  Much more realistic than the others out there.
