Obie Trice - Second Rounds On Me
« on: March 16, 2009, 11:57:16 AM »
Just noticed recently that i'd marked quite a few tracks from this album to buy on Itunes so I decided to check out the whole thing again to see if it was worth buying the whole thing. Well here's what I thought anyway:

1. Intro

2. Wake Up - 3/5
Obie speaks truth on this song but the beat is pretty basic and overall it's an average track. Doesn't really say anything new or offer a perspective i haven't heard before but his delivery is good so i give this track an average rating.

3. Violent - 3.5/5
I liked this track the first time I heard it and still do. Gangster track but not one of the standout tracks imo. Obie again shows he can rap with clever metaphors and rhymes.

4. Wanna Know - 4/5
Brilliant sample and just something different. Obie spits that heat but it isn't quite a classic track so i'd give it a 4.

5. Lay Down - 4/5
Didn't know Obie could spit like this. He speeds up his flow and it's got a real atmospheric beat.

6. Snitch - 4.5/5
One of the rare tracks Akon shines on and i've always liked this track. Obie's storytelling is smooth and the hook is well done.

7. Cry Now - 5/5
Best track on the album! Just Obie tearing up a brilliant beat with a real cool soulful sample as a hook!  8)

8. Ballad of Obie - 3.5/5
The song is a bit different but Obie's quick fire raps stops it from becoming brilliant.

9. Jamaican Girl - 4/5
Hot club track that brings back memories of the summer when this album dropped. Should have been dropped as a single that summer but was dropped to late imo. Club banger!

10. Kill Me a Mutha - 3/5
This track again relies on Obies ability to rap but the beats kinda boring and the hook is generic.

11. Out of State - 4/5
Sounds like a beat you'd expect Outkast to have but Obie takes it on nicely. The weak point in some ways is the hook which is a bit awkward.

12. All of My Life - 5/5
Nate on the hook equals one of the albums finest moments. A real underrated Nate feature imo cause the beat bangs! Obie is his usual self.

13. Ghetto - 3.5/5
Nice track with Trey on the hook and Obie has some cool lines. Just not that mind blowing.

14. There They Go - 4/5
The beat and hook are pretty average but everyone tears it up. Obie and Em drop the hottest verses, with Em actually dropping some nice lines.

15. Mama - 4/5
Nice beat and cool hook by Trey. Obie is cool and describes his mamas life well. Nice soulful track.

16. 24s - 3/5
Sounds like a southern song and imo sounds a little bit outta place. The hook is kinda boring but Obies flow is dope. Better than TIs 24 dedication but still pretty average.

17. Everywhere I Go - 4/5
50s cool on the hook but I just thought this was a nice bouncer, something cool for the car.

18. Obie Story - 4.5/5
Really well done track with the beat switching up a lot. Always like when beats change during the song so this gets a high rating.

Overall = 4/5
I think with this album you have to like Obie as a rapper. Some albums (aka Jeezy) rely heavily on the beat and the rappers flow whereas this is more about promoting Obie's ability to rap. Some nice storytelling and features don't dominate the album and usually just lend a hand with hook. Nice production by Em on this with some of his nicest work. JR does some hot beats as well but to reiterate this album ain't really about the beats or features. its all Obie and if you like him it's worth copping.

Nice review. Pretty much agree with everything except "Ghetto" which is a really dope joint imo. I think that the main reason it didn't get as good feedback as Cheers is the obvious step down in production. Still a very solid album.

tbh i thought some his first album was too commercial and really sounded like it wasn't him. This sounds more like Obie to me and i prefer the darker tone. Cheers was still cool though. im anticipating Bottoms Up!

I prefer Cheers but I get what you're saying because I feel the same way about Banks; didn't think much of his first cd but I love the 2nd one. Dark vibe and more cohesive sound.

I preferred Cheers over this.
Some tracks were bumpin', but others kinda lacked IMO
