Job's Jook Joint [soul, funk, jazz, and classics]
« on: March 19, 2009, 11:38:53 AM »

Juke joint (or jook joint) is the vernacular term for an informal establishment featuring music, dancing, gambling, and drinking, primarily operated by African American people in the southeastern United States. Classic juke joints found, for example, at rural crossroads, catered to the rural work force that began to emerge after Emancipation.[1] Plantations workers and sharecroppers needed a place to relax and socialize following a hard week, particularly since they were barred from most white establishments by Jim Crow laws. Set up on the outskirts of town, often in ramshackle buildings or private houses, juke joints offered food, drink, dancing and gambling for weary workers.
Have a beer, relax, dance and enjoy yourselves!
That being said lets get into it.

Ahh, paying homage to "Q's Jook Joint" I see...

However, most of the artists you guys put up postdate the juke joint era.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch/v/Yd60nI4sa9A" target="_blank" class="new_win">http://www.youtube.com/watch/v/Yd60nI4sa9A</a>

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch/v/yGsAh2jx6JA" target="_blank" class="new_win">http://www.youtube.com/watch/v/yGsAh2jx6JA</a>

Examples of acts that traveled the juke joint circuit.

Anyways, nice thread on 70's R&B. The genre definitely ranks high within my favorite kinds of music.

Until then,
