plz Common is the biggest contradiction in hip hop. To come out dissing people about TV ads and making party joints and then to do the exact same thing when he'd found a little fame. Smh

But im not gonna lie, i copped Be and Finding Forever.

yeah showing up in gap commercials and shit was a little strange for a dude like him

I mean he can do whatever he wants as far as im concerned im not offended by it

Be and Finding Forever.... now thats the issue, classic shit.

im not knocking his hustle but i just found it a bit of a bitch move. Him appearing in Smokin Aces as well was just another thing to list of the way hes contradicted himself. Still a dope artist nevertheless but am I the only one that dont really feel his pre-kanye albums that much? I love songs like The Light and 6th Sense but alot of it i just cant vibe with. Maybe its my inability to get into J Dillas beats.

I would rap over this beat, so I don't see the beef?   Hip-Hop is universal, don't discriminate against any artists!

UMC was a dope release.  Very good music for the summer.  He kicked some nice old school flows on it.

But, this is lame.  I guess the dollar was too good to pass up.
would you have passed it?

I don't agree with the sentiments that UMC was a disgrace or disrespectful to his past material.  If an artists expands their style, he generally get called a sellout which is unfair.

First, he addresses his position on The People,
Quote

Nobody believe, until I believe me
Now I'm on the rise doing business with my guys
Visions realize, music affected lives
A gift from the skies, to be recognize
I'm keeping my eyes on the people, that's the prize

From, What A Word,
[quote And the story goes on and on, it goes on and on and on
They say, "Hey boy, you rap real good but ain't making no hit songs"
So he'd tell himself, yo, yo, yo self you gotta do it the way you do
And make this music from your soul and make it fresh and new

What do you see when look at me and I'm just standing there?
Shit, that make the world all work, that's what in my blood
And I won't stop until I drop 'cause my life's just burning out
So walk, keep climbing, won't look down until I reach the top[/quote]

Finally his verse on CuDi's Make Her Say (I Poke Her Face),
Quote
A stripper from the south looking for a payday
Said "Bitch! You should do it for the love like Ray Jay!"
"But they say you be on that conscious tip"
Get your hair right and get up on this conscious dick
I embody everything from the Gali to the party
Its the way I was raised on the South Side safari, so

Immortal Technique said "What? You don't think revolutionaries don't like to fuck too?"

I don't see the big deal.  I enjoyed the approach he took with UMC.    So, if does appear as a contradiction I really don't care.

Quote
Do I contradict myself?
Very well, then I contradict myself,
I am large, I contain multitudes.

No!  I don't care that he's on some track.  I think the track is lame, not him jumping on it.  By connection of it being a poor track I think he's lame for jumping on it but it doesn't really change my opinion on Common's rap career (past to present) which I respect immensely

I also think he's a horrible actor.  Jeeze he was horrible in Terminator Salvation.

If I were Common I wouldn't spend the first part of my career preaching about not going pop and then later switch it up and start doing the things I was against.

Let me get this straight, you're asking me if I was in Common's shoes would I have passed on the money for laying some vocals for a track?  And, I said, "No!" as in "If I were Common I would not have passed up the opportunity of getting paid some change to lay some guest vocals over some pop white boys."   He gets paid and he can possibly build his fan base.  Good moves!

I don't really care. What's for sure is that he's lost his right to comment on the state of hip hop and be taken seriously.

You haven't even heard the verse yet..  You just posted an "intro"..  This is the same shit I was talking about in the Charles Hamilton vs. Detroit thread...

Just because it is the "Jonas Brothers" you are automatically assuming it is going to be a "party track".

I tryed to find the joint but I couldn't, I found a clip of the Jonas brother talking about how they respected Common as a rapper and poet, and reached out to him..  They also said the song was about getting into a bad situation because you were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I don't know about you, but that sounds like a concept Common would come up, and the "intro" you posted certainly doesn't sound like a party track.....

I don't know about his out-of-music deals, but I'm still giving Common his Hip-Hop pass..  (Still waiting to hear the song, though)
