That's a long ass street to cross to just assume cars will easily stop.  There is this dangerous street to cross at night time in my town, even though it's on a main street it's not very well lit.  Basically, anytime I want to cross to go to the liquor store, I have to run because I really don't trust drivers at all.  Even when I'm driving, I assume everybody else is an idiot and try to be even more careful because of that.  A combination of stupid drivers and stupid pedestrians equals bad results.
